Job Summary

The Installation & Repair Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing Smart City service offerings, with a focus on fiber optic and copper-based infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Install, maintain, and repair Smart City services, including FTTH, POTS, and Ethernet.
  • Perform testing and activation of subscriber lines and fiber/copper-based products.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues involving cable/fiber repair, splicing, faultfinding, and connectivity.
  • Install and maintain fiber optic and networking transport nodes.
  • Operate heavy-duty power equipment (e.g., compressors, pumps, blowers), hand tools, power tools (air/electric), and specialized measuring devices (e.g., multimeters, volt-ohm meters, OTDRs).
  • Conduct continuity and conformance testing.
  • Connect wires and cables to terminals and hardware; attach/detach components as needed.
  • Read and interpret service orders, technical drawings, maps, blueprints, and diagrams.
  • Work with telecom color-coded wires, cables, and fiber.
  • Promote and advocate Smart City products and services to customers.
  • Collaborate across departments and support team members with minimal supervision.
  • Follow and enforce internal control processes, procedures, and safety policies.

Qualifications – The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and cloud/mobile technologies.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Adaptability to evolving systems and processes.
  • Ability to work independently and cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong knowledge of networking and IP, including routers, Layer 2/3 switches, Wi-Fi, IPv4/IPv6.
  • Proficient in fiber optic communications systems, including theory, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Skilled in reading cable drawings and engineering designs; able to identify underground cable infrastructure.
  • Experienced in using test equipment (e.g., multimeters, volt-ohm meters, TDR, OTDR, fiber scopes).
  • Fluent in universal communications color codes for copper and fiber.

Working Conditions

  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
  • Safe operation of company vehicles in diverse traffic and weather conditions, including nighttime driving.
  • Work environments include manholes, hand holes, construction areas, confined spaces, and elevated locations.
  • Physical demands include extended standing/walking, overhead reaching, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs (or more with assistance), and carrying equipment weighing 3–5 lbs for extended periods.

Other Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fiber and copper-based infrastructure.
  • CompTIA Network+ certification preferred.
  • Ability to distinguish colors, read small print, and recognize audible signals.
  • Comfortable using ladders (up to 25 ft.), working at heights (e.g., rooftops, cell towers), and in confined spaces.
  • Availability for after-hours callouts, overtime, shift work, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
