Job description

 

POSITION SUMMARY: 

With minimal supervision; will perform duties as assigned by management in the repair, maintenance and/or rebuilding of equipment in the service shop or field, in a safe, efficient and capable manner in the least amount of labor hours necessary, and without rework.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Perform all requirements found in Caterpillar Engine Operation & Maintenance Manual.
  2. Perform new and used equipment start-up for delivery to end-user.
  3. Perform Caterpillar updates as directed by Caterpillar.
  4. Remove, install, re-condition and repair engines and make necessary adjustments on the engine as well as to the components in the various systems.
  5. Perform diagnostic tests on engines.
  6. Troubleshoot all Caterpillar and allied product systems.
  7. Disassemble, clean and reassemble all Caterpillar and allied product machines.
  8. Use all test and diagnostic equipment available to make adjustments to engines.
  9. Make warranty recommendations and reports in representation of a CAT product.
  10. Measure and identify parts and components for reusability or replacement and ordering new parts as required.
  11. Perform minor welding and fabrication.
  12. This position requires work to be completed within 110% of any Flat Rate times that are established as targets by HPS.
  13. Rework must not exceed 0.5% of labor hours.
  14. Performs other duties as directed by foreman or service manager.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Prefer to have one of the following:
  3. Successful completion of apprenticeship program.
  4. Graduation from an accredited technical school with emphasis on diesel engine.
  5. Two years of experience with hands on mechanical repair on diesel engine.
  6. Must have valid Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  7. Shop Requirements: Valid California Class "C" driver's license with a clean driving record
  8. Field Requirements: Valid California Class "B" driver's license with a clean driving record, if assigned vehicle is required.
  9. Furnish all hand tools required to repair, test and diagnose hydraulic (truck), air (truck), power train (truck), electrical and electronic systems on Caterpillar equipment.
  10. NOTE: Some high dollar value tooling is supplied by Hawthorne.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Walking and moving about on foot often through uneven terrain.
  2. Hands/arms operating equipment, hand and power tools.
  3. Lifting: Up to 50 lbs. daily, frequent exertion. Raises or lowers miscellaneous equipment parts and tools.
  4. Handling: Works with hands.
  5. Reaching: Extends hands and arms in any direction.
  6. Standing: Remains in standing position if required for certain repair or maintenance work.
  7. Climbing: In and out of equipment.
  8. Vision: Reads work tickets, parts and service books and operate heavy equipment.
  9. Talking: Communicates via telecommunications and in person.
  10. Sitting: Sits in equipment and in vehicles.
  11. Stooping: Bends body downward and forward by bending at knees or waist.
  12. Hearing: Hears well enough to discern mechanical problems for safety in and around shop and construction sites and to receive communication by radio, phone and in person.     
  13. Laying: Lies in prone position under vehicles and equipment.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL:

  1. Noise: Works in conditions with constant or intermittent noise.
  2. Temperatures/Weather:  Works in a warehouse and outside with variations of temperature and weather.
  3. Exposure:  Foul odors, fumes and harsh substances.
