Description Do Great Things. Durham Technical Community College is hiring a Director of the Small Business Center in the Center for Workforce Engagement Department. The Director, Small Business Center (SBC) will perform a variety of duties and responsibilities for managing and administering all aspects of the SBC programs; serving the needs for all stages of small businesses in Durham and Orange counties through education, training, counseling, and technical assistance activities.
The Director will also serve as the liaison between the College and its economic development partners for supporting the training needs of small businesses (e.g., entrepreneurial and business ownership counseling, training, and technical assistance). The Director will develop strategic action plans and services that facilitate new business creation, business expansion, and business stabilization along with job creation and retention. Examples of Duties Assess small business developmental requirements and operational needs to design appropriate educational supports
Collaborate with small business community, chambers of commerce, professional organizations, trade associations, and other small business agencies. Develop strong working relationships within the small business community as a preferred resource for small business development and training. Promote and support small business start-up and success, as well as the productivity and financial viability of existing small business operations, especially those of women and minorities.
Manage all aspects of the SBC's operations, including planning, promotion, and implementation of courses, seminars, and public events, as well as maintaining accurate records, budget management, and coordination of all related center activities, including ongoing program evaluation. Recruit, onboard, and supervise all program personnel, including volunteers, who provide counseling, technical assistance, and other appropriate forms of support for prospective and existing small business operators. Maintain the SBC information center content (e.g., referral sources, and data)
Promote the mission and activities of the SBC throughout the service area by all appropriate means (e.g., public speaking engagements, through effective partnerships with local, state, federal, and educational agencies, etc.). Cultivate and maintain positive relations with other college departments facilitating collaborative activities that benefit the center as well as students and colleagues. Employ an advisory board to ensure SBC relevance
Evaluate and assess quality of instruction, training and programming including maintaining course and completion records for College and students (e.g., certificate of completion). Support instructors in the preparation of course material including course handouts, exercises, and assessments. Support locating appropriate instructional and meeting venues
Ensure that all programs are conducted according to Durham Technical Community College, State, Federal, funding source, and program policies. Ensure that all SBC-related reports are completed and submitted to the appropriate office in a timely and accurate manner. Must complete all mandatory work related and professional development training.
Participate in departmental and college-wide team meetings, contributing to the success of the College. Perform all other appropriate duties to support the needs of the department and the College as assigned; including taking intentional measures to promote institutional change for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Entrepreneurship, Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, and/or another appropriate field.
Work Experience: Five or more years of successful business experience in ownership or executive management capacity. Experience working directly with clients or in a customer service or training environment. Note: Candidates must disclose having been a principal officer or owner for any business which filed bankruptcy within the past seven years.
Supplemental Information Provide business start-up, financial, and other applicable counseling services to existing and prospective small businesses. Communicate and relate effectively and professionally with students, business/industry, government and community representatives/citizens, faculty, staff, and administrators. Possess relevant and proficient experience in business operations, supporting business incubation opportunities, coaching, economic development, and/or providing technical assistance to client companies.
Possess strong interpersonal skills, customer service skills, organizational skills, and effective oral, and written communication for appropriate audiences (e.g., students, businesses, community partners, etc.). Effectively present information to individuals and/or groups based on appropriate subject matter. Possess fundamental skills and knowledge related to business basics, strategic planning, quantitative reasoning, problem solving, marketing, sales, and public relations
Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships throughout the College and the community. Ability to effectively employ coaching and counseling skills (e.g., active listening, resource support, etc.). Possess essential technological skills including knowledge of small business-related software, social media, and platforms for virtual meetings, webinars, and scheduling
Assist clients with identifying innovative solutions. Implement project management strategies that support working independently, exercising sound judgement. Employ personal integrity and honesty, and maintain the appropriate level of confidentiality.
Maintain flexibility and willingness to adapt. Ability to work as a team member; supporting the achievement of the department's and the College's mission. Knowledge of the small business community within the College's service area.

Physical Demands: Travel, as needed, to meet program goals and service delivery, gain information, education, and training required for professional development/enhanced performance. Normal Working Hours: A 40-hour work week as determined with supervisor to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, including occasional evening and weekend hours. Summer schedules may vary to enable four-day or four-and-one-half-day work weeks.
