What is a skillet?

A skillet is a type of frying pan with low, slanted sides and a long handle, commonly made from materials like cast iron, stainless steel, or nonstick coatings. Skillets are used for a variety of cooking tasks such as sautéing, frying, searing, and browning foods. They are versatile kitchen tools that can be used on the stovetop and, depending on the material, in the oven. Cast iron skillets are especially valued for their heat retention and ability to develop a natural nonstick surface over time.
