How much do shucker jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for shucker in the United States is $17.20, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $18.51 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Shucker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shucker, you need strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of food safety, often acquired through on-the-job training rather than formal education. Familiarity with specialized knives, shucking tools, and safety equipment is typically required. Excellent hand-eye coordination, stamina, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure are important soft skills. These competencies ensure a high-quality product and safe, efficient operations in fast-paced seafood or restaurant environments.

What are shuckers?

Shuckers are workers who specialize in opening shellfish, such as oysters, clams, or mussels, to remove the edible part inside. They use special tools, like shucking knives, to carefully pry open the shells without damaging the meat. Shuckers can work in seafood processing plants, restaurants, or at seafood markets, and their skills are important for ensuring the quality and safety of the seafood served to customers.

What is the difference between Shucker vs Oyster Harvester?

AspectShuckerOyster Harvester
CredentialsTypically no formal certification, but experience preferredMay require knowledge of harvesting techniques, sometimes certifications for safety
Work EnvironmentIndoor or outdoor seafood processing facilitiesOutdoor coastal waters, oyster beds
Employer & IndustrySeafood processing companies, restaurants, marketsOyster farms, aquaculture companies

The main difference is that a Shucker primarily works in processing oysters by shucking them, often indoors, while an Oyster Harvester is involved in harvesting oysters directly from the water. The Shucker focuses on preparing oysters for sale, whereas the Oyster Harvester is responsible for collecting oysters from the wild or farms. Both roles require knowledge of oysters, but their work environments and responsibilities differ significantly.

What are some common challenges faced by shuckers, and how can they be addressed?

Shuckers often face challenges such as repetitive hand movements, risk of hand injuries from sharp shells or knives, and maintaining speed without sacrificing quality. To address these, many employers provide specialized tools, proper safety training, and encourage regular breaks to prevent fatigue. Working as a shucker also typically involves being part of a team in a fast-paced environment, so strong communication and attention to detail help ensure both safety and efficiency.
