Job description

Plumbing Mechanical Engineer

The Opportunity

As a Mechanical Engineer at SHP, you will lead the majority of the plumbing design effort on assigned projects - from early concepts through construction documentation and administration. You'll develop plumbing system designs, supervise junior engineering/design staff, and ensure project quality and technical accuracy.

This role is ideal for engineers who have several years of A/E consulting experience and are ready to take ownership of design leadership and coordination in a highly collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead plumbing system design across most project phases
  • Design domestic water, sanitary, storm, natural gas, and specialty plumbing systems
  • Serve as a key technical resource for architects, interior designers, and consultants
  • Supervise junior engineering and design staff; review work for accuracy and completeness
  • Prepare reports, drawings, calculations, and specifications
  • Ensure code compliance and provide construction-administration support
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and contribute to proposal development

Key Requirements

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • 4–7 years of experience in the A/E/C industry
  • FE preferred; PE licensure in progress or achieved
  • LEED accreditation preferred

Skills & Experience

  • Strong proficiency in Revit and plumbing system design fundamentals
  • In-depth technical knowledge and strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to lead day-to-day engineering workflows and supervise staff
  • Strong communication skills for internal collaboration and consultant coordination
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines with accuracy and organization

Work Authorization: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. SHP is not able to provide employment visa sponsorship for this position now or in the future.

Location & Travel Expectations

This role is based in our Greensboro, North Carolina office location and is ideal for candidates who thrive in a highly collaborative, in person environment. Being onsite allows for deeper day to day engagement with peers and project teams, faster decision making, and organic moments of creativity and mentorship that emerge through shared space.

At the same time, many of our most meaningful opportunities happen beyond the walls of the office. Travel is a key part of how we build relationships, gather insight from the people we design for, and bring our ideas to life alongside clients and partners. Whether it's participating in discovery sessions, facilitating workshops, or gaining on the ground understanding of a project's context, travel enables us to show up where it matters.

Candidates for this role should be willing and able to travel as needed, often with short notice, to support firmwide priorities, strengthen client connections, and grow their impact across markets. We view this flexibility as a way to expand visibility, build trust, and access the kind of hands-on experiences that fuel career growth.
