General Shipyard Estimator
Position Summary
The General Shipyard Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for ship repair, maintenance, fabrication, and modernization projects. This role analyzes project specifications, labor requirements, materials, subcontractor costs, and production schedules to develop comprehensive proposals while ensuring compliance with customer requirements and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
  • Review customer Requests for Proposals (RFPs), specifications, drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Conduct vessel inspections and ship checks to determine project scope and labor requirements.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and overhead.
  • Develop work breakdown structures and estimate labor hours by trade.
  • Obtain and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotations.
  • Collaborate with project managers, production supervisors, engineering, purchasing, and operations to develop accurate project estimates.
  • Identify project risks, assumptions, and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Prepare proposal packages, bid summaries, and pricing documentation.
  • Maintain estimating databases, labor production rates, and historical cost information.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, customer site visits, and project kickoff meetings as required.
  • Support contract negotiations by providing cost analysis and technical clarification.
  • Ensure estimates comply with applicable Navy, Coast Guard, commercial, OSHA, and environmental regulations.
  • Assist with change order pricing and additional work estimates during project execution.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Marine Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of estimating experience in a shipyard, marine construction, or heavy industrial environment.
  • Strong understanding of ship repair processes, welding, pipe fitting, electrical, coatings, structural fabrication, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and estimating software.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and mathematical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple estimates while meeting strict deadlines.
  • Knowledge of government contracting and Navy ship repair procedures is highly desirable.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience estimating commercial and U.S. Navy vessel repair projects.
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA standards and military specifications.
  • Understanding of production scheduling and resource planning.
  • Strong negotiation and vendor management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to board vessels, climb ladders, walk through ship compartments, and work in industrial environments.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during ship checks.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
