How much do ship engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 10, 2026, the average yearly pay for ship engineer in the United States is $128,141.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $129,000.00 and $129,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by ship engineers during long voyages?

Ship engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining and troubleshooting complex machinery under demanding conditions, working long hours in shifts, and adapting to repairs with limited resources while at sea. They must also be prepared to respond quickly to mechanical failures or emergencies to ensure the vessel's safety and efficiency. Additionally, ship engineers work closely with deck officers and other crew members, requiring strong communication and teamwork skills, especially during extended periods away from shore.

What Does a Ship Engineer Do?

As a ship engineer, your duties include the operation and maintenance of a ship’s engine, boiler, pump, generator, and other machinery. You are also responsible for supervising and coordinating crew tasks in the maintenance and operation of the ship. Your responsibilities may include starting a ship’s engine to propel the ship, controlling the speed as ordered by the captain or bridge computers, and fixing any components that need immediate repair. As a ship engineer, you may also be in charge of reporting any issues to the appropriate staff onboard and maintaining records regarding engine activities and maintenance.

What are ship engineers and what do they do?

Ship engineers are responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing the engines, machinery, and systems that power ships and other marine vessels. They ensure that all mechanical and electrical equipment, such as propulsion systems, generators, and pumps, are running efficiently and safely. Ship engineers also monitor equipment performance, conduct routine inspections, and respond to emergencies to keep the vessel functioning smoothly during voyages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ship Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ship Engineer, you need expertise in mechanical and marine engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and typically a marine engineer’s license. Familiarity with ship propulsion systems, engine monitoring software, and regulatory compliance systems is vital. Problem-solving, teamwork, and strong attention to detail are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure safe, efficient vessel operation and compliance with maritime regulations.

What is the difference between Ship Engineer vs Marine Engineer?

AspectShip EngineerMarine Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in marine systemsEngineering degree, marine certifications
Work EnvironmentOnboard ships, shipyardsOn ships, marine repair facilities
Industry UsageShipbuilding, shipping companiesShip maintenance, marine services

Ship Engineers and Marine Engineers often share similar credentials and work environments, focusing on maintaining and repairing ship systems. The main difference lies in their specific roles: Ship Engineers typically oversee the entire engineering department onboard ships, while Marine Engineers may work more broadly in marine repair and maintenance outside of ships. Both roles are essential in the maritime industry and often overlap in skills and certifications.

Job description

About Etched

Etched is building the world’s first AI inference system purpose-built for transformers - delivering over 10x higher performance and dramatically lower cost and latency than a B200. With Etched ASICs, you can build products that would be impossible with GPUs, like real-time video generation models and extremely deep & parallel chain-of-thought reasoning agents. Backed by hundreds of millions from top-tier investors and staffed by leading engineers, Etched is redefining the infrastructure layer for the fastest growing industry in history.

Job Summary

Etched is scaling faster than any other company in the AI hardware space. To match that pace, our internal operations and decision-making systems need to be as innovative as our chips. We’re looking for a Core Technology Engineer to design and build the automation infrastructure that unifies our business intelligence, streamlines cross-functional workflows, and powers data-driven decision-making across GTM, talent, legal, and production operations.

This is a hands-on, full-stack engineering role with a business lens. You’ll scope problems directly with stakeholders, architect and ship automation systems end-to-end, and own adoption so your work has immediate impact.

What You’ll Do

  • Build Full-Stack Automation Systems: Design, develop, and deploy robust internal applications and integrations across front-end, back-end, and data pipelines to eliminate manual workflows.

  • Unify Business Intelligence: Create a single source of truth by integrating metrics from GTM, production, talent, and legal ops into role-specific dashboards with ≤2-click access.

  • Automate Cross-Functional Workflows: Implement alerting and reporting systems for recruiter pipelines, offer risks, GTM performance, contract tracking, and production forecasting.

  • Integrate Disparate Systems: Connect tools and data sources (Slack, CRM, HRIS, manufacturing tools, etc.) via APIs and middleware to ensure seamless information flow and real-time visibility.

  • Deliver Under Pressure: Prioritize aggressively and ship complete, stable systems on fast timelines without sacrificing maintainability.

Representative Projects

  • Talent Ops Automation: Automate candidate pipeline analytics, recruiter performance dashboards, and offer-stage risk alerts.

  • Unified BI Platform: Build a single integrated suite pulling KPIs from GTM, production, talent, and legal ops with custom dashboards for leadership, managers, and ICs.

  • Automated GTM & RevOps Reporting: Implement a weekly auto-generated GTM report showing deal activity, trends, and flagged risks/opportunities.

  • Legal Ops Workflow Automation: Create automated contract tracking and compliance reminders with Slack/email integration.

  • Production Forecasting Engine: Develop a live production forecast pulling from manufacturing and DV/PD tools and generate variance reports comparing forecast vs. actual delivery.

  • Unified Performance Management System: Consolidate metrics from all automated workflows into a single layer showing both individual and team-level performance.

You May Be a Good Fit If You:

  • Have strong full-stack development skills and experience shipping end-to-end business applications with clean, maintainable code.

  • Are comfortable integrating disparate systems and designing resilient, low-maintenance automations that scale with growth.

  • Think like a business operator: you understand how GTM, production, talent, and legal workflows intersect with company strategy and scope projects for maximum leverage.

  • Thrive under pressure and can deliver high-impact systems quickly without sacrificing quality.

  • Operate with high EQ and low ego: you partner effectively across functions, incorporate feedback, and elevate others’ workflows.

  • Bring intensity and persistence: you treat blockers as puzzles to solve and dive deep into any system or dataset to find leverage.

Benefits

  • Full medical, dental, and vision packages with generous premium coverage

  • Housing subsidy of $2,000/month for those living within walking distance of the office

  • Daily lunch and dinner in our office

  • Relocation support for those moving to San Jose (Santana Row)

  • Unlimited compute budget subject to ROI justification

Base Compensation Range

  • $150,000 – $225,000

How We’re Different

Etched believes in the Bitter Lesson. We think most of the progress in the AI field has come from using more FLOPs to train and run models, and the best way to get more FLOPs is to build model-specific hardware. Larger and larger training runs encourage companies to consolidate around fewer model architectures, which creates a market for single-model ASICs.

We are a fully in-person team in San Jose (Santana Row) and expect all of our technical staff to contribute broadly across functions.
