What is a ship engineer?

Ship engineers are responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing the engines, machinery, and systems that power ships and other marine vessels. They ensure that all mechanical and electrical equipment, such as propulsion systems, generators, and pumps, are running efficiently and safely. Ship engineers also monitor equipment performance, conduct routine inspections, and respond to emergencies to keep the vessel functioning smoothly during voyages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a ship engineer?

To thrive as a Ship Engineer, you need expertise in mechanical and marine engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and typically a marine engineer’s license. Familiarity with ship propulsion systems, engine monitoring software, and regulatory compliance systems is vital. Problem-solving, teamwork, and strong attention to detail are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure safe, efficient vessel operation and compliance with maritime regulations.

What are some common challenges faced by ship engineers during long voyages?

Ship engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining and troubleshooting complex machinery under demanding conditions, working long hours in shifts, and adapting to repairs with limited resources while at sea. They must also be prepared to respond quickly to mechanical failures or emergencies to ensure the vessel's safety and efficiency. Additionally, ship engineers work closely with deck officers and other crew members, requiring strong communication and teamwork skills, especially during extended periods away from shore.

What is the difference between Ship Engineer vs Marine Engineer?

Job description

Hey — Let's find your next opportunity About the job

We are building Reflow, a workforce and workflow intelligence platform that helps teams improve performance through a deep understanding of how work actually happens. Customers get excited after the first demo. Forward Deployed Engineers turn that excitement into adoption, retention, and growth.

This is a technical, customer-facing role at the intersection of customer success, engineering, product, and go-to-market.

What you’ll do
  • Own the customer journey: Setup, onboarding, adoption, and long-term success.
  • Shorten time-to-value: Move customers from demo to value quickly.
  • Work hands‑on with customers to configure Reflow for their real life use cases and turn their data into meaningful information to help them data driven business decisions.
  • Build integrations, data pipelines, prototypes, and proofs of value for strategic customers
  • Debug data issues, model behavior, and system performance in live customer environments
  • Capture and structure customer feedback: Be the voice of the user in product and engineering decisions.
  • Partner with product and engineering to surface technical gaps, edge cases, and feature opportunities
  • Assist the contract process with new partners, working closely with our legal team to keep things smooth and fast.
  • Build strong relationships that lead to expansions and renewals.
  • Create and refine the playbook: Onboarding processes, success metrics, touchpoints.
Who you are
  • Entrepreneurial: Former founder, early employee of a startup, or operator who thrives in ambiguity.
  • Technical background with hands‑on experience in engineering, data, or systems roles
  • Comfortable writing code, working with APIs, data pipelines, and production systems
  • Able to move between customer conversations and technical implementation without losing momentum
  • Curious and analytical. You dig into workflows, systems, and data to uncover root causes
  • Sharp communicator: Written, verbal, and human.
  • Methodical: You keep yourself, your customers, and your teammates on track by creating clear templates and playbooks.
Bonus Points
  • Experience as a Forward Deployed Engineer, Solutions Engineer, Customer Success, or early-stage startup engineer
  • Background in B2B SaaS, enterprise software, or data-heavy products
  • Familiarity with analytics platforms, BI tools, workflow systems, or automation software
  • Experience supporting enterprise customers through security, data access, or compliance reviews*
  • Be an early, high-impact hire working directly with the founders and founding team
  • Shape how Reflow is deployed, adopted, and extended in the real world
  • Influence product direction by bringing real customer systems and constraints into engineering decisions
  • Build, deploy, learn and repeat

We’re open to you starting part-time and evolving into full-time (contract or W2).

Lead Windows Developer

We’re building Reflow, a workforce and workflow intelligence platform that helps teams understand and improve how work gets done. Our Windows app is critical to capturing performance data and enabling insights across enterprise environments. We’re looking for an experienced Windows app developer to take ownership of development, stability, and deployment, working alongside Denis to scale the platform.

What you’ll do
  • Lead Windows app development with a focus on performance, maintainability, and cross-environment stability.
  • Profile, debug, and optimize for speed, memory usage, and reliability.
  • Build for managed and restricted enterprise environments using MDM tools and deployment best practices.
  • Integrate with backend APIs, and optionally, implement or adjust backend endpoints when needed.
  • Collaborate with other developers to ensure consistent experiences across platforms.
  • Contribute to app architecture, testing, and release processes to ensure smooth updates and deployments.
Who you are
  • Proficient in C# with hands‑on experience in Windows app development (Avalonia UI, WPF, UWP, or WinUI).
  • Skilled at profiling, debugging, and performance optimization.
  • Experienced in enterprise‑managed or MDM‑deployed app environments.
  • Comfortable working with APIs and understanding full‑stack communication.
  • Detail‑oriented, you care about consistency, reliability, and smooth user experiences across setups.
  • Experience with cross‑platform or Electron‑based apps.
  • Understanding of Django or other backend frameworks and API design.
  • Familiarity with security compliance and enterprise privacy standards.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing for Windows apps.

You’ll own a key product surface, the Windows app that powers Reflow’s data collection and user insights. You’ll work closely with the core team, improving performance, reliability, and the developer experience across platforms. This role is ideal for someone who wants to combine craftsmanship with real impact

We’re building Reflow, a workforce and workflow intelligence platform that helps teams deeply understand how work gets done. As we scale, the data we collect is becoming richer and more complex. We need a data platform engineer to help us design and operate the systems that turn that data into intelligence — powering analytics, workflow insights, and economic modeling.

What you’ll do
  • Design, implement, and maintain a scalable data warehouse (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, or similar).
  • Develop and optimize ETL pipelines to ingest data from APIs and internal systems.
  • Model and manage datasets to support flexible analytics and product features.
  • Collaborate with engineering team to improve data mining and analytics performance.
  • Build and maintain dashboards and visualization tools (Metabase, Tableau, Power BI) to enable internal and external insights.
  • Ensure data reliability, cost efficiency, and performance optimization across environments.
  • Implement event‑based pipelines for real‑time analytics and reporting.
  • Contribute to data governance, privacy, and security best practices.
Who you are
  • Experienced in data warehouse architecture and scalable analytics infrastructure.
  • Strong with SQL, data modeling, and pipeline performance optimization.
  • Hands‑on with ETL tools, data ingestion frameworks, and cloud‑based data operations.
  • Capable of balancing technical depth with real‑world impact — you build systems people actually use.
  • Comfortable navigating tradeoffs between cost, scalability, and complexity.
  • Curious about how data translates into insights, decisions, and automation.
  • Experience with Python for analytics and data wrangling.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML‑driven analytics or predictive modeling.
  • Exposure to real‑time or streaming data architectures.
  • Understanding of data governance, compliance, and secure cloud operations.

You’ll build the backbone of Reflow’s intelligence layer, the systems that make our data usable, fast, and insightful. You’ll work directly with founders and engineers across analytics, infrastructure, and product. This is a high‑impact technical role that sits at the intersection of scale, performance, and strategy.

We’re open to part or full‑time. Ideal for builders who care about performance and precision at scale.
