What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ship Design Engineer working remotely, and why are they important?

To thrive as a remote Ship Design Engineer, you need a solid background in naval architecture or marine engineering, often requiring a relevant degree and experience with ship design principles. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD, Rhino, or ShipConstructor) and familiarity with regulatory standards like IMO and classification societies are essential. Strong communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively with distributed teams and manage projects independently. These skills and qualifications are critical to ensuring high-quality, compliant designs and seamless teamwork despite the remote work environment.

How does working remotely as a ship designer impact collaboration with naval architects and engineering teams?

Remote ship designers typically collaborate with naval architects and multidisciplinary engineering teams using digital tools such as CAD software, project management platforms, and video conferencing. While physical model reviews or shipyard visits may be less frequent, regular virtual meetings and document sharing ensure effective communication and project alignment. Staying proactive in communication and being comfortable with collaborative technology are key to overcoming challenges such as time zone differences or limited in-person interactions. This setup allows for flexibility while maintaining high standards in design and project coordination.

What is ship design remote work?

Ship design remote work refers to the process of designing ships and marine vessels using digital tools and software from a location outside of a traditional office or shipyard. Professionals in this field use computer-aided design (CAD) and simulation software to create, modify, and analyze ship structures, systems, and layouts. Remote ship designers often collaborate with engineering teams and clients through online platforms, ensuring that all specifications and safety standards are met. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication, as much of the work is done virtually.

Job description

Full-time / Consulting New York, US / Remote YC-backed About the Role This position bridges professional engineering expertise and frontier AI development. Your focus is on transforming structural intelligence into a scalable product — not performing routine engineering tasks. You'll sit at the intersection of structural engineering judgment and autonomous AI, encoding your domain knowledge into systems that can verify designs, check material standards, and enforce building codes at scale.

Why Join • YC-backed, well-funded, and already generating revenue • Rare combo: genuinely hard AI + a $2T industry that's barely been touched by software • Huge ownership — early equity, your work ships and matters from day one • Oxford founders — tight-knit team who care about building things properly • Moving to NYC in May 2026 — join at the very beginning The Role You'll work directly with the founders to encode structural engineering knowledge into AI agents, shape the product roadmap, and deliver real results to enterprise AEC clients. What You'll Do • Convert structural logic, material standards, and building codes into patterns AI agents can execute • Collaborate with leadership to test features, ship weekly iterations, and maintain professional-grade accuracy • Lead technical implementation of AI-generated reviews for enterprise clients • Conduct technical meetings with major firms to understand internal standards and pain points • Analyze large datasets to identify recurring design issues and develop automated verification systems What We're Looking For • 2+ years structural design experience with familiarity of manual drafting challenges • Demonstrated QA/QC expertise with independent peer review experience • Ability to abstract specific project patterns into universal engineering logic • Strong communication skills and inclination toward workflow automation • Bonus: BIM coordination or Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) experience • Bonus: familiarity with AI/ML tools or startup environments AwesomeSalary MeaningfulEquity IncredibleTeam World-classProduct Sound like you?
