What is ship design remote work?

Ship design remote work refers to the process of designing ships and marine vessels using digital tools and software from a location outside of a traditional office or shipyard. Professionals in this field use computer-aided design (CAD) and simulation software to create, modify, and analyze ship structures, systems, and layouts. Remote ship designers often collaborate with engineering teams and clients through online platforms, ensuring that all specifications and safety standards are met. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication, as much of the work is done virtually.

How does working remotely as a ship designer impact collaboration with naval architects and engineering teams?

Remote ship designers typically collaborate with naval architects and multidisciplinary engineering teams using digital tools such as CAD software, project management platforms, and video conferencing. While physical model reviews or shipyard visits may be less frequent, regular virtual meetings and document sharing ensure effective communication and project alignment. Staying proactive in communication and being comfortable with collaborative technology are key to overcoming challenges such as time zone differences or limited in-person interactions. This setup allows for flexibility while maintaining high standards in design and project coordination.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a ship design engineer working remotely?

To thrive as a remote Ship Design Engineer, you need a solid background in naval architecture or marine engineering, often requiring a relevant degree and experience with ship design principles. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD, Rhino, or ShipConstructor) and familiarity with regulatory standards like IMO and classification societies are essential. Strong communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively with distributed teams and manage projects independently. These skills and qualifications are critical to ensuring high-quality, compliant designs and seamless teamwork despite the remote work environment.

Job description

Sr. Software Engineering Manager

IT and Programming - Memphis, Tennessee

Department  IT and Programming

Employment Type  Full-Time

Minimum Experience  Manager/Supervisor

Role Summary

This is a player-coach role. You will lead a small, focused engineering team and stay close enough to the code to review it, debug it, and occasionally write it. We are not looking for someone who manages from a spreadsheet.

You will own delivery of our recovery intelligence platform, the engine that finds third-party liability recovery opportunities our clients would otherwise never see. That work spans the full stack: web and desktop interfaces, middle-tier services, the API layer that connects them, and the SQL underneath it all. Some of the estate is modern, containerized, and running on Azure. Some of it is a mature Windows desktop application that has been earning revenue for years and still needs to be supported while it evolves. You will be comfortable with both, and clear-eyed about how to move from one to the other without breaking what works.

The technical range here is real: API engineering, web and WinForms front ends, backend services, microservices, containerization, Kubernetes, and Azure. So is the ownership. This is a small company, which means the person in this seat sets the engineering standard rather than inheriting one. This is a remote position; candidates in or near Memphis, TN are preferred.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and grow a small software engineering team, setting technical standards, running planning and delivery cadence, and removing blockers.
  • Own end-to-end delivery for the recovery intelligence platform: scope, sequence, estimate, ship, and support what you ship.
  • Design and build the API layer and middle-tier services that expose platform capability to internal applications and external partners.
  • Work across the stack, from web user interfaces and the existing Windows desktop application through backend services and data access.
  • Design, write, and tune SQL: schema design, stored procedures, indexing, and query performance on large data sets.
  • Decompose monolithic components into microservices where it earns its keep, favoring incremental migration over rewrites that put revenue at risk.
  • Containerize workloads and operate them reliably on Kubernetes in Azure.
  • Own the build and release path: source control strategy, code review, CI/CD pipelines, environment management, and release quality.
  • Direct the day-to-day work of outsourced development partners, holding them to the same standards for code quality, security, and documentation.
  • Hold the line on non-functional requirements: security and PHI protection, performance, reliability, logging, and observability.
  • Reduce single points of failure by documenting undocumented business logic and spreading institutional knowledge across the team.
  • Balance new capability against technical debt, and make the tradeoff visible rather than silent.

Qualifications

Experience

  • 8+ years in software engineering, including 3+ years leading or managing a development team.
  • Strong hands-on background in C# and .NET, including API engineering and REST service design.
  • Experience building and maintaining both web applications and Windows desktop applications (WinForms or comparable).
  • Strong SQL Server skills: complex queries, stored procedures, schema design, and performance tuning.
  • Practical experience with microservices architecture, containerization, and Kubernetes.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, including compute, storage, identity, and managed Kubernetes.
  • Experience owning CI/CD pipelines and modern source control practice, such as Azure DevOps or equivalent.
  • Track record modernizing a legacy application incrementally while keeping it in production.
  • Knowledge of healthcare and insurance data is strongly preferred.

Required Competencies

  • Technical credibility with engineers, earned by staying close to the code rather than above it.
  • Judgment about sequencing and risk, especially when the system in question is generating revenue today.
  • Solid engineering habits: version control, testing, code review, reproducibility, and documentation.
  • Ability to spot opportunities while organizing data chaos and cutting through noise.
  • Clear communication of technical tradeoffs, status, and risk to both technical and business audiences.
  • Self-starter with a track record of achievement who will roll up sleeves to tackle hard projects.

Education

  • S./B.A. required in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, a related technical field, or equivalent experience.

License/Certification

  • Azure certification (e.g., AZ-204 or AZ-305) preferred.
  • Kubernetes certification (e.g., CKA or CKAD) a plus.

Preferred

  • Deeper experience with healthcare, insurance, or claims data in a regulated, high-compliance environment.
  • Experience managing nearshore or offshore development partners.
  • Experience with event-driven architecture, message queues, and integration patterns.
  • Experience introducing automated testing to a codebase that did not previously have it.
  • Located in or near Memphis, TN.
