What is freelance ship design?

Freelance ship design involves independent professionals who create plans and specifications for ships or marine vessels on a contract basis, rather than working for a single employer. These designers may work with shipyards, private clients, or engineering firms to develop new vessels or modify existing ones. Their work typically includes conceptualizing layouts, ensuring compliance with maritime regulations, and integrating engineering systems. Freelance ship designers often use specialized software for 3D modeling and collaborate with naval architects and marine engineers throughout the design process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Ship Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Ship Designer, you need strong skills in naval architecture, marine engineering principles, and a relevant degree or certification in ship design or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Rhino), 3D modeling tools, and knowledge of maritime regulations are typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and project management skills help you effectively collaborate with clients and coordinate complex design projects. These abilities ensure you can deliver innovative, compliant, and functional ship designs that meet client needs and industry standards.

What is the difference between Freelance Ship Design vs Ship Designer?

AspectFreelance Ship DesignShip Designer

Employer & Industry UsageClients hire freelancers for specific projects; used across maritime sectorsDesign firms, shipbuilders, and maritime companies employ ship designers

Freelance Ship Design involves independent professionals working on a project basis, often remotely, while Ship Designers are typically employed by organizations with formal credentials and a structured work environment. Both roles focus on ship design but differ mainly in employment status and credentials.

What are some common challenges freelance ship designers face when working with clients remotely?

Freelance ship designers often encounter challenges such as aligning design expectations across different time zones, ensuring clear communication regarding technical specifications, and managing project revisions efficiently. Since ship design projects typically involve multidisciplinary collaboration, effective use of digital project management tools and regular virtual meetings are essential to keep all stakeholders on the same page. Building strong relationships with naval architects, engineers, and shipyards remotely requires proactive communication and detailed documentation to minimize misunderstandings and ensure project success.

Job description

About Polymarket
Polymarket is the world's largest prediction market platform. We enable individuals to express views on real-world events by trading on outcomes across politics, economics, sports, culture, and current affairs. Built as a peer-to-peer marketplace with no centralized "house," Polymarket aggregates diverse opinions into transparent, market-based probabilities that reflect collective expectations about the future.
We're growing fast - both in terms of volume ($21B traded in 2025) and adoption as an alternative news source. Our ambition is to become a ubiquitous beacon of truth in global media and we need your help adding fuel to the fire.
About the Role
Polymarket is looking for a freelance Junior Designer to own ad creative at the intersection of performance marketing and brand. You'll ship creative across social and programmatic and support the wider design team on the decks, templates, and digital assets behind everything Polymarket puts into the world. This is a high-output role: you'll produce dozens of creative variants a week, see them through to launch, and keep the bar high across every asset that ships.
This is a freelance engagement based out of our NYC office, with the expectation of regular in-person collaboration 3-5 days each week.
What You'll Do
  • Design and ship static, motion, and short-form video ads across paid social, display, and emerging channels
  • Iterate quickly on creative concepts based on what's working, and see assets through from brief to launch
  • Build and maintain creative templates and systems that help the team move at volume without losing quality or brand integrity
  • Turn real-time market moments and news into ad creative within hours
  • Partner with growth marketers, copywriters, and brand designers to test hooks, formats, and angles
  • Keep a pulse on what's happening culturally and bring fresh references back to the team

What We're Looking For
  • 1-3 years of design experience (in-house, agency, or freelance) with a portfolio showing shipped work at volume - paid social, motion, or performance-led design strongly preferred
  • Fluent in Figma and confident in After Effects, Premiere, or CapCut (or equivalent motion tools)
  • Understand performance marketing well enough to talk shop with growth marketers - you know what a hook is, why a thumb-stop matters, and how creative drives CAC
  • Move fast, take feedback well, and don't get precious about work that needs to be tested, killed, or remade
  • Strong opinions about craft but stronger instincts about what converts
  • NYC-based and available to work 3-5 days out of our office with consistent weekly hours and quick turnarounds
  • (Plus) Interest in prediction markets, politics, finance, or internet culture

Compensation
  • Competitive hourly or project-based rate, commensurate with experience
  • This is a freelance/contract engagement - benefits such as health insurance and 401k are not included
