Shep information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Shep position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shep (Sheep Herder), you need hands-on livestock management experience, animal husbandry knowledge, and often a background in agricultural work. Familiarity with fencing, ranch equipment, herding dogs, and basic veterinary care tools is important, though formal certifications are not always required. Strong observational skills, patience, and the ability to work independently make someone exceptional in this role. These abilities are essential for ensuring herd health, minimizing loss, and adapting to the challenges of working in variable outdoor environments.

What does a typical workday look like for a Shep?

A typical day for a Shep involves monitoring and moving flocks of sheep to ensure they have access to fresh pasture, checking the health and safety of animals, and maintaining equipment or fences. Sheps often work outdoors in all weather conditions and may spend extended periods in remote areas, sometimes living onsite in temporary shelters. The work can be solitary, but Sheps frequently collaborate with veterinarians, ranch owners, and sometimes other herders during lambing season or large-scale moves. Flexibility is important, as daily tasks vary according to the season, flock size, and land conditions. Over time, a Shep can advance to managing larger herds or taking on broader livestock management responsibilities.

Job description

Outlet Merchandising Intern

Every Fall Internship Should Feel This Good!

We’re on the lookout for highly motivated college students, in good academic standing, who are passionate about our brand and working toward a career in the retail industry. Interns will be responsible for assisting in day-to-day operations within their designated department, providing support to other departments as needed, as well as handling administrative tasks throughout the office.

About us:

vineyard vines is a highly successful, privately held, American clothing and accessory retailer founded in 1998 on Martha’s Vineyard by brothers, Shep & Ian Murray. With Shep & Ian still at the helm today, vineyard vines has experienced exponential year over year growth and now operates over 120 retail locations including an outlet division, a successful e-commerce business, domestic distribution center, and expanding corporate headquarters. In addition, vineyard vines is carried in major department stores such as Nordstrom and Bloomingdales as well as numerous specialty boutiques across the US.

vineyard vines was founded on a state of mind that Every Day Should Feel This Good.

You don’t need to be on a beach, by the ocean or on vacation to have Every Day Should Feel This Good moments. It’s a state of mind that we all experience, and one where everyone is invited. At vineyard vines, we don’t just live an #EDSFTG life away from our desks—we bring it to work with us, too.

In our stores and at our Harbor Drive headquarters, our company culture is fun, encouraging and welcoming to all. We work hard and play harder, and we never take ourselves too seriously. And while we have many company goals, our number one priority is making vineyard vines a great place to work for all employees.

Our team is our family, and we’d never have grown to where we are today without them.

We’re committed to building an inclusive team across all channels, departments and stores within our community. We hope you’ll join us and see what the smiling pink whale is all about.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with sample management, seasonal line development, and fitting of garments.
  • Learn how to run a retail apparel/non-apparel business.
  • Manage inventory, help choose the seasonal line, and create “look books” for the outlet stores.
  • Learn basics in retail math to understand selling reports and financial reporting.
  • Assist in product development by presenting ideas for on-brand styles for all departments in outlets (men’s, women’s, boys, and girls).
  • Work with design to collaborate on color palettes, choosing and developing styles, and sourcing fabrics and trims.

What you bring:

  • Working towards a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Strong interpersonal communication
  • Ability to plan, manage time, and make decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Organizational and time management skills are essential as well as the ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects simultaneously to meet deadlines
  • Competition and industry awareness
  • Commitment to career growth of self and others
  • Team focused, confident, and professional
  • Creative, adaptable, entrepreneurial and driven by integrity

Every-day should feel this good because:

  • We have a fun-entrepreneurial culture filled with truly “good” people
  • We offer flexible scheduling and are happy to work around your class schedule
  • On occasional Thursday’s we have Bagels and Big Ideas where you can learn something new from executive leaders
  • We offer a generous employee discount so you can rep our lifestyle on-and-off the boat

A few things you should know:

  • This internship is for credit only and you must be able to provide the appropriate paperwork from your school in order to be considered
  • Able to come into the office on either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday (2x a week)
  • We work with your class and extracurricular schedule to determine your internship schedule. Please note: we recommend working two full 8 hour days and one 4 hour half day.
  • Fall internships can be up to 15 weeks long with a max of 20 hours per week
  • Fall internships slated to start early to mid-September
  • With a growing number of applicants each year, this is a highly competitive Internship program. Please feel free to add additional information to your application such as a link to your blog, LinkedIn, your portfolio, or any other relevant project to show your passion!
