Job Summary: Using CLP vans, the Driver delivers and picks up materials to Allegheny County libraries along specific routes to and from the CLP Library Support Center. The Driver also sorts and stacks materials and generally prepares them for deliveries. Performs other duties as assigned.
Location: CLP - Library Support Center (West End)
Work Hours: 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday, 8 am - 4:30 pm
Salary: $19.50 per hour
Supervisor:Eric Nichols-Manager-Shipping
Unit: This position is represented by the Teamsters union.
Essential Functions:
  • Delivers books and other library materials to libraries along regularly scheduled routes;
  • Performs special deliveries as needed;
  • Stacks and loads bins in vans for deliveries, and makes exchanges at each stop;
  • Interacts with library staff at each location to ensure efficient and effective service;
  • Loads, unloads and sorts heavy materials at the Library Support Center;
  • Acts as a representative of CLP;
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Competencies and Qualifications:
  • Requires current, valid Pennsylvania driver's license that has been maintained for at least six (6) years; with a clean driving record for at least the past three (3) years;
  • Ability to understand and interpret CLP's policies and procedures;
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle (specifically a CLP van), maintain a clean driving record and have knowledge and ability to abide by all traffic laws;
  • Strong knowledge of city and county roadways and efficient usage;
  • Ability to interact well with library staff and maintain a high level of customer service;
  • Ability to maintain punctuality for consistent route deliveries, including reliability for a daily regimented schedule.

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.;
  • Minimum of one (1) year of related van driving experience, with similar route/delivery driving experience strongly preferred;

Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Work demands regular strenuous effort including the handling of heavy bins, boxes, tools, equipment, and/or materials of 30 to 60 pounds, and stacks of said materials weighing in excess of 150 pounds safely moved using a hand truck or flatbed hand truck.
Library materials are sorted through manual sorting or through an automated sorting machine. The driver, while working in the department before and after his route, is expected to perform these sorting duties as needed, involving handling them, reading their ownership label, or locating their barcodes (in the case of the automated sorter), and moving full bins of materials from the machine or from a shelf, stacking them, moving stacks of materials to outgoing route areas and moving stacks to the garage for loading onto the delivery vans. A full bin can weigh 30 to 60 pounds and a stack of full bins of materials can weigh in excess of 150 pounds (easily moved with a hand truck). Must have physical ability to effectively, efficiently and repeatedly perform all related duties.
The work involves risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g. working around moving parts, carts, or machines; may require working in adverse weather conditions.
