Job description

Title: Machine Operator/Sheeter
Department: Copy Paper
Location: 1107 Burt Street, Shreveport, LA 71107
Wage Category: Non-Exempt
Report To: Assistant Director, Copy Paper
Overview: The Machine Operator/Sheeter is responsible for the safe, efficient, and accurate operation of the sheeter machine to produce finished paper products that meet company quality standards. This role includes monitoring machine performance, conducting quality inspections, assisting with maintenance, and maintaining a clean, safe work environment. The operator also supports production flow, inventory accuracy, and crew safety.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Equipment Operation and Monitoring
  • Crosstrained and serves as a backup for the Machine Operator/Wrapper as needed.
  • Operate and continuously monitor the sheeter machine to ensure efficient and safe production.
  • Ensure the sheeter machine remains in proper operating condition at all times.
  • Adjust cutting and slitter blades as necessary to produce clean cuts, ream cuts, and job-specific requirements.
  • Maintain production schedules for the sheeter and ensure make-ready sheets are trimmed to job size.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment issues through early detection, observation, and machine sounds during operation.
  • Clear jams and repair minor malfunctions to minimize downtime.
  • Enter roll information into production reports and reconcile sheeted material to ensure accurate inventory control.
  • Create and maintain required production and activity logs.
  • Report regularly to supervisors, providing updates on production activities and progress.

Quality Control and Inspection
  • Monitor quality of cuts, sheet length, stacking methods, and overall product appearance.
  • Perform quality inspections throughout production runs.
  • Conduct quality checks on all orders, including verification of sheet length, width, grain direction, caliber, mill number, stock type, and paper surface defects.
  • Verify all information on production orders prior to and during each job.
  • Ensure finished products consistently meet company quality standards.

Maintenance and Housekeeping
  • Complete scheduled operator-level preventative maintenance.
  • Assist maintenance technicians as needed or required.

  • Change slitter blades and perform necessary adjustments to support optimal machine performance.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the machine, surrounding equipment, and work area.
  • Ensure overall safety and cleanliness of equipment and production areas.

Safety Responsibilities
  • Maintain responsibility for the safe operation of the sheeter machine and the safety of all production line employees.
  • Work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Monitor operations to ensure compliance with safety standards at all times.

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum of one year of machine operation experience, preferably in paper production.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to operate production equipment and related tools.
  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve equipment issues.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, paper dust, fumes, and odors.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and perform physical tasks, including bending, lifting, and occasional climbing.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (weights over 50 pounds must be team-lifted).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
