These tools offer more integrated, cloud-based solutions for designing workflows, customizing sites, and managing content. SharePoint administrators and designers are encouraged to transition to these newer platforms for ongoing support and updates.

What is a SharePoint Designer?

They use specialized tools, including Microsoft SharePoint Designer, to design site layouts, develop custom solutions, and streamline business processes. SharePoint Designers often encounter the challenge of balancing each department's unique requirements with organizational standards and platform limitations. Customizing sites frequently involves managing conflicting requests, ensuring user-friendly navigation, and maintaining site performance while adhering to governance policies. Effective communication with stakeholders and a solid understanding of SharePoint’s capabilities are crucial for delivering tailored, scalable solutions that meet business needs.

Is SharePoint end of life?

SharePoint as a platform continues to be supported by Microsoft, with ongoing updates and new versions such as SharePoint Server 2019 and SharePoint Online. While older versions like SharePoint 2010 and 2013 have reached end of support, organizations are encouraged to upgrade to current versions or migrate to SharePoint Online to ensure security and functionality.

What does a SharePoint Designer do?

A SharePoint Designer is responsible for creating, customizing, and maintaining SharePoint sites and workflows to improve collaboration and document management within an organization. They use tools like SharePoint Designer and often have skills in HTML, CSS, and workflows to tailor SharePoint environments to business needs.

Is SharePoint development a good career?

SharePoint development is a viable career option for those skilled in web development, collaboration tools, and Microsoft technologies. It offers opportunities in enterprise environments, often requiring certifications like Microsoft Certified: SharePoint Developer, and can involve working on intranet portals, workflows, and custom solutions. The demand for SharePoint professionals remains steady in organizations that rely on Microsoft 365 and enterprise content management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SharePoint Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SharePoint Designer, you need expertise in SharePoint platform architecture, web design, and content management, often supported by a degree in IT or related field. Proficiency with SharePoint Designer, Microsoft 365, HTML, CSS, and sometimes JavaScript or Power Automate is typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you understand user needs and deliver effective solutions. These competencies ensure efficient site design, functionality, and user satisfaction within organizational intranets and collaboration platforms.
