Job description

Associate General Counsel, Product & Regulatory

Flex is a growthโ€‘stage, NYC headquartered FinTech company that is creating the best rent payment experience. Itโ€™s hard to believe that itโ€™s 2026 and paying rent on time is expensive, inflexible, and difficult. Weโ€™re here to change that! Flex enables our users to pay rent throughout the month on a schedule that better fits their finances and budget. Our mission is to empower as many renters as possible with flexibility over their most significant recurring expense. After deliberately keeping a stealth profile as we built up unprecedented investor support and an enthusiastic user base, we are looking for motivated individuals to help us keep our mission growing. Will you be a part of the team?

About the Role

Flex is hiring an Associate General Counsel, Product & Regulatory to join our Product & Regulatory Legal team. This role leads crossโ€‘functional legal projects with company wide impact โ€” partnering directly with senior leaders across Product, Engineering, Finance, and BD to shape how Flex navigates a complex and evolving consumer financial regulatory landscape. Youโ€™ll drive multiple strategic decisions simultaneously and own significant portions of the legal function roadmap.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Lead crossโ€‘functional legal projects from intake to resolution โ€” setting strategy, driving decisions, and coordinating across teams
  • Serve as the senior legal partner for product and engineering, providing realโ€‘time guidance on new features, product enhancements, and goโ€‘toโ€‘market strategy
  • Own regulatory change management endโ€‘toโ€‘end: monitor federal and state developments (CFPB, state AGs, state legislatures), assess business impact, and recommend a path forward
  • Advise senior leaders on consumer regulatory risk, enforcement trends, and litigation exposure across Flexโ€™s product lines
  • Review and negotiate BD and partner agreements for consumer regulatory risk
  • Identify opportunities to integrate new legal tools and workflows; coordinate with IT and Security to expand legal tech infrastructure
  • Own the legal AI governance framework โ€” define acceptable use standards, output review protocols, and escalation criteria; represent Legal in crossโ€‘functional AI working groups
What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • 7+ years of legal experience with deep consumer financial services expertise โ€” fintech, bank, CFPB/state agency, or outside counsel in this space
  • Strong grasp of the consumer financial regulatory stack: CFPB rulemaking, Regย Z/TILA, UDAP/UDAAP, money transmission, state licensing (servicing, brokering)
  • Proven track record advising product and engineering teams directly and influencing decisions at the senior leadership level
  • Experience leading complex, crossโ€‘functional legal projects with significant companyโ€‘wide impact
  • Comfortable operating fast and with incomplete information โ€” gives useful guidance before all the facts are in
  • Clear, plainโ€‘English communicator; no one at Flex reads memos
  • JD from an accredited law school; active bar admission required
Nice to Have
  • Experience with rentโ€‘adjacent fintech, payments, or embedded finance products

Flex takes a marketโ€‘based approach to pay, ensuring compensation is commensurate with a candidateโ€™s experience and our internal leveling guidelines.

For candidates located in our Tierย 1 markets (NYC, SF, Seattle), the base salary pay range for this role is $256,000ย โ€“ย $320,000ย USD. For all other U.S. locations, Flex utilizes a geographic pay differential based on a costโ€‘ofโ€‘labor index. If you are located outside of the Tierย 1 states listed above, your starting pay will be adjusted to align with the market conditions of your specific geographic zone. Please speak with your recruiter for additional information regarding the specific range for your location.

Life at Flex

We understand that it takes a diverse team of highly intelligent, curious, determined, empathetic, and selfโ€‘aware people to grow a successful company. Our HQ is located in New York City, but we have employees located throughout the U.S., Australia, Canada and South America. We are growing quickly, but deliberately, with a focus on building an inclusive culture. Our dynamic team has incredible perspectives to share, just as we know you do, and we take great pride in being an equalโ€‘opportunity workplace.

Offices

Roles posted in New York, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City are hybrid positions with onโ€‘site expectations of 2โ€“3 days per week in our local offices. For candidates outside of these areas, you may be eligible for our relocation assistance program.

For fullโ€‘time U.S. employees we offer:

  • Competitive medical, dental, and vision
  • Company equity
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Unlimited paid time off + 13 company paid holidays
  • Parental leave
  • Flex Cares Program: Nonโ€‘profit company match + pet adoption coverage
  • Free Flex subscription

For fullโ€‘time nonโ€‘U.S. employees, we offer:

  • Competitive compensation + company equity
  • Unlimited PTO
