How much do sewing apprentice jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 12, 2026, the average hourly pay for sewing apprentice in the United States is $16.49, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $16.83 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the highest paying apprenticeship?

The highest paying apprenticeships are often in skilled trades such as electrical, plumbing, or HVAC, where apprentices can earn higher wages as they gain experience and certifications. In the sewing field, apprenticeships typically offer lower pay initially, but specialized or advanced roles in fashion design or technical tailoring can lead to higher earnings over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Sewing Apprentice position, and why are they important?

A Sewing Apprentice should possess basic sewing skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn new techniques, often with a high school diploma or equivalent as a foundation. Familiarity with sewing machines, cutting tools, and, in some cases, introductory coursework or certifications in textiles can be beneficial. Dependability, patience, and the ability to follow instructions help apprentices excel in both independent and collaborative workshop environments. These competencies are crucial for producing high-quality work, meeting deadlines, and developing steadily within the sewing profession.

What kinds of tasks can I expect to perform daily as a Sewing Apprentice?

As a Sewing Apprentice, your daily tasks will often include activities like measuring and cutting fabric, operating sewing machines, hand stitching, and assisting with pattern layout under the guidance of experienced staff. You may also perform finishing touches such as hemming, adding buttons, or pressing garments, and help maintain equipment and a tidy workspace. Collaboration with senior tailors, designers, or production teams is common, offering opportunities to learn directly from skilled professionals. Over time, you’ll gradually take on more complex responsibilities as your skills improve. This hands-on, supportive environment is designed to build your confidence and prepare you for more advanced roles in sewing and garment production.

Is 27 too old for an apprenticeship?

Sewing apprenticeships are open to individuals of various ages, including those in their late 20s. Age is generally not a barrier, and employers often value skills, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn over age. Many apprenticeships welcome mature learners who bring life experience and dedication to the craft.

What is the highest paying apprenticeship trade?

Sewing apprenticeships typically do not offer the highest wages compared to trades like electrical, plumbing, or HVAC apprenticeships, which often have higher pay rates due to the technical skills and certifications involved. These trades usually provide better earning potential during and after apprenticeship completion. Wages vary by region and experience, but skilled trades generally pay more than entry-level apprenticeships in sewing or textiles.

Do tailors do apprenticeships?

Yes, tailors often offer apprenticeships to train individuals in sewing, garment construction, and tailoring techniques. These programs typically involve hands-on learning, mentorship, and may lead to certification or increased skill levels in the craft.

What is a Sewing Apprentice job?

A Sewing Apprentice is a beginner-level position where you learn the fundamentals of sewing, fabric handling, and garment construction under the guidance of experienced professionals. Apprentices assist with tasks like stitching, cutting, and assembling fabrics while developing technical skills. This role provides valuable hands-on experience for those interested in tailoring, fashion design, or textile production. Over time, apprentices may advance to more specialized roles in the industry.

SALARY: $17.25 per hour, with increases based on skill and efficiency attainment

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Children's Factory is looking for a Sewing Apprentice to join our production team and build on existing sewing skills in a hands-on manufacturing environment. This is a great opportunity for someone with personal or professional sewing experience - such as home sewing, costume making, alterations, quilting, or similar work - who wants to grow their skills using industrial sewing equipment.

In this role, you'll learn how to efficiently produce high-quality products while working alongside experienced team members in a fast-paced production setting. While industrial sewing machine experience is not required, candidates should already have a basic understanding of sewing techniques and fabric handling. This position is designed as a training path into a Machine Operator: Sewing role, with the opportunity to advance after demonstrating consistent performance and sewing efficiency.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS:

The work completed by our Sewing team directly supports the quality and reliability of the products our customers depend on. Every stitch, measurement, and quality check helps ensure products are made safely, consistently, and efficiently.

This role is important because it helps maintain production quality while developing skilled sewing operators within the team. Candidates who are motivated to learn and improve can build valuable manufacturing and sewing experience while contributing to daily production goals.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Learn to operate industrial sewing machines and related production equipment
  • Sew fabric pieces together following patterns, sew notes, and production instructions
  • Build sewing speed, consistency, and accuracy over time
  • Perform quality checks to ensure products meet company standards
  • Change needles and thread as needed during production
  • Help maintain sewing machines through basic cleaning and routine upkeep
  • Keep your work area clean, organized, and safe
  • Work closely with supervisors and team members to meet daily production goals
  • Follow company safety procedures and attendance expectations
  • Continue developing sewing efficiency with the goal of advancing into a Machine Operator: Sewing position

ABOUT YOU:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Some prior sewing experience is required, such as home sewing, costume making, alterations, quilting, embroidery, or similar hands-on sewing work
  • Industrial sewing machine experience is helpful but not required
  • Previous manufacturing or production experience is a plus
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced production environment
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions carefully
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Able to work well as part of a team
  • Basic math skills for measurements and calculations
  • Willing to learn new skills and adapt to changing production needs
  • Able to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 lbs. throughout the workday

WHY JOIN US:

  • Be Part of a Dynamic, Supportive Team: We value collaboration and celebrate success together.
  • Grow Your Career: We support professional development and offer opportunities to expand your skills.
  • Make an Impact: Your work will contribute to making a difference in the lives of children, educators, and parents around the world by supporting the financial health of a company that creates innovative and educational products that inspire learning and creativity.
