What is a service advisor service writer?

Service Advisors, also known as Service Writers, are professionals who act as the liaison between customers and the automotive service department. They help customers understand their vehicle's maintenance needs, write up service requests, explain recommended repairs, and provide cost and time estimates. Service Advisors also communicate with technicians to ensure repairs are completed correctly and on schedule. Their goal is to ensure customer satisfaction and efficient workflow in the service department.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a service advisor service writer?

To thrive as a Service Advisor (Service Writer), you need strong automotive knowledge, customer service skills, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with dealership management systems (DMS), repair order software, and sometimes ASE certification is valuable. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help build trust with customers and coordinate efficiently with service technicians. These skills are essential for ensuring customer satisfaction, accurate service documentation, and smooth workflow in automotive service departments.

How does a service advisor service writer typically handle high volumes of customer requests during peak times?

During busy periods, Service Advisor Service Writers prioritize effective communication and organization to manage multiple customer requests efficiently. They often rely on scheduling tools, clear documentation, and strong teamwork with technicians to ensure timely updates and accurate estimates for each customer. Proactively managing expectations and keeping customers informed about wait times or delays are essential parts of the role. This approach helps maintain customer satisfaction and smooth workflow in the service department.

Service Advisor – Battlefield Automotive Organization

The Battlefield Automotive Organization is looking for an experienced Service Advisor who wants to build a long-term career with an established, family-owned automotive organization.

We are looking for more than someone to simply fill an open position. We want to add the right person to our team — someone who is dependable, professional, motivated, and interested in finding a dealership where they can establish themselves and grow for years to come.

As a Service Advisor, you will be the primary connection between our customers and technicians. You'll listen to customer concerns, recommend appropriate maintenance and repairs, communicate throughout the repair process, and make sure every customer receives the level of service and communication they deserve.

This is a long-term opportunity for the right person with an established organization that values its employees and its customers.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive pay

  • Health insurance

  • Paid time off and sick leave

  • 401(k)

  • Stable, established family-owned automotive organization

  • Ongoing manufacturer training and development

  • Opportunity for long-term growth

  • Supportive, team-oriented work environment

Responsibilities
  • Greet customers promptly and professionally

  • Listen carefully to customer concerns and accurately document vehicle symptoms

  • Obtain necessary customer and vehicle information

  • Schedule service appointments and manage repair orders

  • Recommend appropriate maintenance based on vehicle age, mileage, condition, and service history

  • Prepare and clearly explain estimates for parts and labor

  • Communicate effectively with technicians regarding diagnosis, repairs, and additional recommendations

  • Monitor vehicle progress throughout the day

  • Keep customers informed throughout the repair process

  • Obtain authorization for recommended repairs and services

  • Review completed repair orders and invoices for accuracy

  • Clearly explain completed repairs, maintenance, warranties, and charges

  • Follow up with customers when appropriate

  • Build lasting customer relationships and help create repeat service business

What We're Looking For

Our ideal candidate understands that being a great Service Advisor is about more than writing repair orders. It requires communication, organization, follow-through, automotive knowledge, and the ability to earn a customer's trust.

Qualifications include:

  • Previous automotive service department experience

  • Service Advisor, Service Consultant, or Assistant Service Manager experience preferred

  • Dealership experience is a plus

  • Working knowledge of automotive maintenance and repair

  • Strong customer-service and communication skills

  • Ability to manage multiple customers and repair orders in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong organizational and follow-through skills

  • Comfortable using computers and learning dealership management systems

  • Willingness to complete manufacturer training and learn new technology

  • Professional appearance and attitude

  • Personal and professional integrity

  • Dependable and able to work effectively as part of a team

  • Valid driver's license

We're Looking for the Right Long-Term Fit

The Battlefield Automotive Organization isn't interested in simply filling a chair. We're looking for someone who wants to become an important part of our organization.

If you're an experienced Service Advisor who is ready for a change and looking for stability, a strong team, an established family-owned organization, and a place where you can build a career, we'd like to hear from you.

Apply today to learn more about this opportunity with the Battlefield Automotive Organization.
