The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the sixth largest transportation system in the United States, with a vast network of fixed route services including bus, subway/elevated, trackless trolley, light rail, and commuter rail serving a 2,200 square mile service region.SEPTA has become an integral force in the economic success of the Philadelphia region, providing an efficient and reliable source of transportation. 

We are seeking candidates for the position of Telecom System Tech (5738) in the City Transit Division Communications & Signals Department.   

The starting rate of pay for this position is $40.97/hour. After six months of service, the rate of pay will increase to $45.52/hour.

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision of the Communications Maintenance Manager, installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces telecommunication systems and all related equipment. 
 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Installs, maintains, diagnosis problems, repairs and replaces all telecommunication systems equipment including voice, data, teletype, multi-line, and key systems; PBXs, station equipment, telephone related parts and accessories, distribution frames and boxes, public address systems, inter-communication systems and circuits, audio visual systems, AVPA systems/VMS, video surveillance system/VMS, DC power plants, standby battery systems, UPSs, emergency call box systems, computers and computer workstations and servers, computer Ethernet networks, internetworking, Wi-Fi, SCADA systems, voice mail systems, audio loggers, VOIP systems, ECD/ACD/IVR systems, hybrid SIP dispatcher/control consoles, serial communication networks, SONET fiber optic digital transport systems/OTN, point to point fiber optic links, wave division systems, corporate communication media platforms, facilities management, SSDL, VTAG, RTVL, DOSS. Works with testing devices including frequency and data signal generators, oscilloscopes, transmission measuring devices, and volt-ohm meters.
  2. Makes connections, splices, terminates communication cables and wiring including paper, rubber, cotton, insulated leaded and fiber optics cables above and/or below ground.
  3. Installs and repairs overhead messengers, conduit and telecommunication cable inclusive of copper, fiber, and coax; maintains cable, terminals and accessories, telecom wires, taps and fuse blocks.
  4. Completes appropriate paperwork as required, i.e., work log.
  5. Performs rigging and scaffold work; climbs poles; manufactures brackets, hangers, temporary jumpers and parts.
  6. Staffs help/service desk; manages trouble tickets database; supports field staff; interfaces with service providers such as Verizon, Comcast, etc.; staffs SEPTA Headquarters; moves, adds, changes wire management, Real Estate reconfigurations, Facilities management, and Call Center support.
  7. Acts as Sysadmin for Centrex, video, OTN, ECB's, ACD's, etc.
  8. Provides engineering oversight including drawing revisions, project specification evaluations, and end-of-life evaluations/recommendations.
  9. Provides interdepartmental support services such as IT-installation and cabling, B&B-SCADA, New Payment Technology - FVD copper and fiber optic cable, Signals - CTC RS-400 and CommNet FOC, Legal/Video Evidence-video OCC, and Power - SCADA.
  10. May direct employees of a lower classification.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Graduate of technical school with a degree in electronics or telephony; or two years experience in electronics or telephony.
  • Must satisfactorily pass Telecommunications System Technician test.
  • Must have a working knowledge of DC power distribution and be experienced in the installation, maintenance, and repair of telephone equipment and communications/power cables.
  • Must understand electronic principles
  • Must have the ability to work from circuit diagrams and blueprints.  
  • Must possess valid Pennsylvania Class I driver's license or equivalent.
  • Requirements for handling material and equipment; SEPTA's power and cable system; departmental policies, procedures, and work methods; and SEPTA locations.
  • Must become familiar with SEPTA general rules and regulations.

EQUIPMENT USED:

  • (Including but not limited to) Complex testing devices including frequency and data signal generators, oscilloscopes, transmission measuring devices, volt-ohm meters, and special related tools and hand tools.

PHYSICAL:

  • Sitting 10%; Standing and moving about 90%

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works in stopped, bent, cramped positions; climbs poles; works from scaffolds; works outside exposed to extreme heat and cold, works in close proximity to cables up to 730 volts.
