Job description

Company Description

At AeroVect, we automate baggage and cargo logistics at some of the busiest passenger airports and air freight hubs in the world. Backed by top-tier investors, AeroVect is shaping the future of airport automation, beginning with self-driving tow tractors.

If you have a passion for applying autonomous driving technologies to impact the flow of goods for millions of people, we want to talk to you!

Job Description

We're looking for a talented mechatronics and robotics engineer with a sharp eye for functional reliability to own all mechanical and electrical aspects of our autonomous vehicle demonstrator platform.

In this role, you will be responsible for building vehicle sensing and actuation hardware capabilities in a fast-paced, early-stage startup environment.

Not afraid of scrappiness in this versatile role, your job scope will involve owning all parts of the development lifecycle from desktop engineering design and simulation to hands-on automotive integration and root-cause analysis. You will own and lead the safety-critical design, implementation, and reliability engineering of our ground vehicle hardware platform to automate cargo and baggage movement at some of the busiest airports around the world.

The opportunity offers a technical, hands-on engineer the chance to help develop a market-defining enterprise product that combines autonomous vehicle technology with a software-as-a-service (SaaS) business model.

This role will work directly with our co-founders.

What You'll Do

  • Maintain and improve the reliability of current vehicle autonomy systems, including all electrical and mechanical aspects of our autonomous sensing and actuation platform, as well as the base vehicle itself

  • Define, lead, and own the hands-on creation of new vehicle platform integrations to expand the compatibility of our autonomy systems with a broad range of airport vehicles, interacting with suppliers and vendors as appropriate

  • Design, test, and track the safety-critical functionality of our autonomous vehicle through simulations and real-world test runs, including executing a multi-stage pilot project in contexts that include baggage halls, vehicle corridors and the airport apron

  • Work with the autonomy engineering team at large to support all aspects of ground vehicle autonomy, including calibration and integration of perception, planning, navigation, and control systems

  • Understand and keep up to date with automotive and robotics safety standards

  • Up to 50% travel may be required

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong fundamentals in mechanical engineering, including fabrication, design, and metalworking with use of tools such CAD, MIG and MMA welding, and common machining methods

  • Experience with electrical distribution, logic, and signal processing/manipulation, including CAN bus, differential signaling, and transmission line theory

  • Familiarity with electrical distribution, PCB assembly, modifications and repairs to SMT boards down to 0402 component sizes, high and low voltage wiring harnesses and circuit protection devices with the use of tools and processes such as oscilloscopes, micropencil, and PIDG Crimps (must be able to inspect crimps)

  • High-performing power electronics experience including comfort developing for high-voltage (60-1500VDC and 30-1000VAC) as defined by ECE/324/Rev.2, servicing industrial batteries of varied chemistries, and implementing wide-ranging DC-DC and DC-AC converters

  • Thorough understanding of DFM, DFA, DFT, and DFR principles for both mechanical and electrical systems

  • Candidates with unconventional experiences especially encouraged

  • Willingness to get hands-on and have lots of fun

Ideal Qualifications

  • Multiple years of experience in hardware design and assembly of both mechanical and electrical systems

  • Background in safety-critical software/system development (preferably a ground robotics functional safety standard such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508)

  • Prior experience developing and supporting all aspects of autonomy for a production ground-vehicle subsystem, or research prototype (end-to-end, full lifecycle development preferred)

  • Startup experience

  • Comprehensive profile of personal projects relating to mechatronics systems

  • Experience with ROS
