Job description

The Credit Underwriting Manager - Mid-Ticket is responsible for leading a Pod of Mid-Ticket Credit Analysts while ensuring timely, consistent and sound credit decisions that support AmurEF's business objectives. The role combines hands-on underwriting and decisioning of complex commercial equipment finance transactions with hiring, coaching, performance management, quality assurance, workflow management and policy development. The Manager serves as a senior credit resource, providing guidance on complex transactions, addressing decision Appeals and post-Approval modifications, presenting recommendations to Credit Committee and partnering with Sales to structure transactions that appropriately balance growth and risk. The position also develops and tracks quality, production and service KPIs, monitors attendance and keeps Management informed of day-to-day Pod activity.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Supervision and Training
  • Supervise the Mid-Ticket Pod, including approving time off, performing annual reviews and periodic VIP meetings.
  • Ensure that the Mid-Ticket Credit Analysts understand each Customer's business, industry and financial/credit profile through financial analysis, risk underwriting, information review and direct Customer communication.
  • Ensure that Mid-Ticket Credit Analysts understand the intent and the application of the Credit Policies and have access to all the tools, resources and knowledge necessary to decision every transaction at the required level of output.
  • Ensure that all Mid-Ticket analysts are fully trained to the same level to create cohesiveness and consistency in process and decisions; identify performance, knowledge and leadership development gaps and seek ways to fill them, for self as well as his/her reports.
  • Develop, manage and track KPIs for the Mid-Ticket team and periodically discuss each Analyst's performance with Management.
  • Lead hiring interviews for new Credit Analyst candidates.
  • Propose modifications to the Credit Policies based upon direct experience.
  • Ensure completeness, accuracy and ease of access of all Mid-ticket Credit Files for booked transactions, both in Salesforce and in the Shared Drives.
  • Manage, organize and monitor completeness and turn around times of the Post-Funding Queue.

Credit Underwriting and Approval
  • Underwrite all applicable equipment financing requests across a wide variety of industries, markets and Equipment types: gather the Credit Files, perform Customer due diligence and prepare, where applicable, the Credit Underwriting Memo, financial analysis, Approval notes and/or any additional presentation materials.
  • Perform detailed financial statement spreading and analysis, including balance sheets, income statements, statements of cash flows, business and personal tax returns, interim financial statements and supporting schedules. Evaluate cash flow adequacy, leverage, liquidity, profitability, working capital and debt service capacity to determine appropriate credit structures and risk ratings.
  • In every Transaction, identify key underwriting issues within the following areas, use them as basis for the decision as well as present them where applicable to the Credit Committee in a clear, concise and accurate manner, both in writing and verbally:
  • Qualitative: Customer's competitive position, business and operating model, management and ownership depth, key strengths and weaknesses, impact of industry trends, etc.
  • Financial: historical and, if applicable, projected financial trends and performance, cost structure, financial ratio analysis, trends and outliers, etc.
  • Equipment: invoice vs. market price, depreciation trends, remarketing costs and value, etc.
  • Guide and assist Originators in obtaining Customer information in an efficient and effective manner
  • Provide regular and timely feedback on the underwriting status of each Transaction.
  • Assist the Docs & Funding Department in completing any non-standard aspect of a Transaction.
  • Share responsibility with the Originator to manage and close the highest possible number of Transactions, with pricing, terms and conditions mutually acceptable by AmurEF and the Customer.
  • As needed or requested, decision accurately and consistently Flow Transactions.
  • Complete Post-Funding requests within the target timeframe.
  • Provide support to Collections with respect to late payment issues or modifications of Mid-ticket Exposures, leveraging both his/her knowledge of the account and personal relationship with the Customer.

Requirements
Qualifications
  • Expert knowledge of commercial credit underwriting principles, risk assessment and equipment finance.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, mentoring and performance management skills, with demonstrated ability to develop high-performing underwriting teams.
  • Expert ability to spread, analyze and interpret business financial statements, tax returns, interim financial statements and cash flow.
  • Strong understanding of leverage, liquidity, debt service coverage, working capital, profitability and financial ratio analysis.
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making skills in complex credit situations.
  • Ability to underwrite transactions across multiple industries while balancing risk, customer needs and business objectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presenting recommendations to Credit Committee and senior management.
  • Strong planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with AmurEF personnel, Customers, Originators, Sales, Operations and Collections.

Required Experience
  • Minimum ten (10) years of commercial credit underwriting or risk management experience, including significant hands-on underwriting experience in equipment finance.
  • Minimum five (5) years of leadership or management experience with direct responsibility for commercial credit underwriting professionals.
  • Minimum five (5) years of equipment finance experience involving new and used equipment.
  • Experience underwriting transactions across multiple industries, including but not limited to the following: transportation, industrial, specialty vehicle, tow and recovery, manufacturing, construction and franchise.
  • Proven ability to coach, mentor and develop underwriting professionals while maintaining high standards for credit quality, productivity, consistency and service.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics or another relevant field recommended; equivalent relevant commercial lending experience may be considered.

This position has direct supervisory responsibilities for a Pod of Credit Analysts, typically three to six, and serves as trainer and mentor for new and existing hires. The Manager participates in staff interviews and hiring decisions, establishes performance expectations, evaluates employee performance, conducts annual reviews and periodic development meetings, and administers necessary disciplinary action, including terminations.
