What is a Senior Tax Manager?

A Senior Tax Manager is an experienced tax professional who oversees a company's tax compliance, planning, and reporting. They manage tax teams, ensure adherence to tax laws and regulations, and develop strategies to minimize tax liabilities. Senior Tax Managers often collaborate with other departments and advise upper management on tax implications of business decisions. Their role is critical in maintaining financial health and avoiding costly penalties for the organization.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Tax Managers when managing multiple client portfolios?

Senior Tax Managers often juggle numerous client portfolios simultaneously, each with unique compliance requirements and deadlines. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and effective delegation to team members. Additionally, staying updated on evolving tax laws and ensuring both accuracy and timeliness in filings can be demanding. Collaboration with internal teams and clear communication with clients are essential to successfully navigate these challenges and deliver high-quality service.

What is the difference between Senior Tax Manager vs Tax Director?

AspectSenior Tax ManagerTax Director
ResponsibilitiesOversees tax compliance, manages tax team, prepares tax filingsDevelops tax strategies, oversees overall tax planning, liaises with executive leadership
Experience & CredentialsCPA or equivalent, 5+ years in tax rolesCPA or JD, 8+ years, leadership experience
Work EnvironmentCorporate tax department, reporting to Tax VP or CFOSenior leadership, strategic planning, cross-department collaboration

While both roles require strong tax expertise and certifications like CPA, the Senior Tax Manager focuses on managing compliance and team operations, whereas the Tax Director is responsible for strategic tax planning and aligning tax goals with overall business objectives.

What Does a Senior Tax Manager Do?

A senior tax manager's primary responsibilities are to supervise a team of other tax professionals and complete a variety of additional tax-related duties for a company. In this career, you are responsible for overseeing internal audits, developing and maintaining company tax policies, and ensuring the business is in compliance with relevant tax codes on local, state, federal, and even international levels. Some senior tax managers still work one-on-one with clients, but the client is typically a larger or more complex one than they worked with at lower levels. In addition to these responsibilities, you also document after-tax revenue payments, deductions, and other expenses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Tax Manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Senior Tax Manager, you need deep expertise in tax law, compliance, and financial analysis, typically backed by a CPA or similar qualification and significant experience in tax roles. Familiarity with tax preparation software, ERP systems, and advanced Excel skills is essential for managing complex tax filings and reporting. Strong leadership, communication, and analytical thinking help you guide teams and advise clients or stakeholders effectively. These skills ensure accurate tax reporting, minimize risk, and support strategic business decision-making in a dynamic regulatory environment.

Job description

Senior Tax Manager / Tax Director โ€“ Partner Track

Salary: $150,000 โ€“ $200,000+ (potential flexibility for exceptional experience)

Location: Northern Virginia (Great Falls Area)

Office Situation: Primarily in-office during tax season with some hybrid flexibility outside busy season once established

Why This Opportunity Stands Out:

This is a rare opportunity to join a highly respected boutique public accounting firm with an established private-client practice, long-term client relationships, and a real path toward future partnership.

This is not a churn-and-burn environment. The firm has built a strong reputation through referrals, retention, and relationship-driven client service over several decades. They are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys public accounting, values client relationships, and wants long-term growth in a collaborative environment.

What makes this role especially unique:

  • Real Partnership-Track Potential โ€“ Leadership is actively planning for long-term succession and client transition
  • Established Client Base โ€“ Opportunity to step into an existing book of high-net-worth individuals, trusts, estates, and closely held businesses
  • Excellent Work-Life Balance for Public Accounting โ€“ Limited overtime outside tax season
  • Strong Compensation & Benefits:
    • Base salary up to $200K+ depending on experience
    • Bonus potential
    • 3% 401(k) match
    • Employer-paid health benefits contribution
    • CPE/CPA support
    • Generous PTO structure with additional OT-to-vacation conversion
  • Tight-Knit, Professional Team โ€“ Direct access to firm leadership with a collaborative, low-ego environment
  • Focused Tax Practice โ€“ No audit work and no international tax
  • Growing Firm โ€“ Strong referral pipeline and continued organic growth

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and review 1040, 1041, 1065, and 1120S tax returns
  • Manage relationships with private clients, trusts, estates, and closely held businesses
  • Review tax work and support junior staff development
  • Provide tax planning and advisory support to clients
  • Assist with long-term client relationship transition and succession planning
  • Utilize CCH Axcess and QuickBooks within tax workflow processes

Qualifications:

  • Required:
    • CPA required
    • 7+ years of public accounting tax experience
    • Strong hands-on 1040 experience
    • Public accounting background
    • Experience managing client relationships
    • Strong communication skills
    • Ability to work onsite during tax season
    • Interest in long-term public accounting and leadership growth
  • Preferred:
    • Trust & estate experience
    • Pass-through entity experience (1065 / 1120S)
    • Private client or high-net-worth client exposure
    • CCH Axcess experience
    • QuickBooks experience
    • Boutique or regional CPA firm background
    • Experience mentoring or reviewing staff work

If youโ€™re looking for a long-term public accounting opportunity where you can grow professionally, build meaningful client relationships, and potentially step into future leadership, this is absolutely worth a conversation.
