What are Senior Systems Engineers?

Senior Systems Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining complex IT systems within an organization. They oversee the integration of hardware and software, ensure system reliability, and troubleshoot advanced technical issues. Senior Systems Engineers often lead projects, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with other departments to meet organizational goals. Their role is critical in maintaining the infrastructure that supports business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Systems Engineers when integrating new technologies into existing infrastructure?

Senior Systems Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between legacy systems and new technologies, minimizing downtime during migrations, and addressing unforeseen security vulnerabilities. Effective integration requires thorough planning, cross-team collaboration, and detailed testing to avoid disruptions to business operations. Staying current with emerging technologies and adopting best practices for change management are essential for overcoming these challenges and ensuring smooth implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Systems Engineer, you need expertise in systems architecture, troubleshooting, and network administration, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field and several years of relevant experience. Familiarity with virtualization platforms, cloud services (like AWS or Azure), automation tools (such as Ansible or PowerShell), and certifications like CompTIA, Microsoft, or Cisco are often required. Outstanding problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you lead initiatives and collaborate effectively across teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring system reliability, scalability, and security in complex IT environments.

What Is a Senior Systems Engineer?

A senior systems engineer is an IT (information technology) professional tasked with designing and maintaining network systems and security. Examples include large server or storage systems, computer networks, and mainframes. As a systems engineer, your primary duties are to oversee the daily operations of your facility and lead a team of engineers in designing new systems to replace old ones. You may work for a company that provides engineering services and solutions for other businesses, or you may be part of a large university or other institution's IT department. Skills needed for the career include the ability to work independently, leadership, and analytical problem-solving. A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or IT and significant experience in a lower systems engineering position are essential qualifications.

Your future role

Take on a new challenge and apply your deep systems engineering expertise in a cutting-edge and dynamic field. You’ll work alongside a collaborative, innovative, and highly skilled team of professionals.

You'll play a pivotal role in delivering high-performance engineering solutions that meet customer requirements, while ensuring compliance with engineering processes and regulatory standards. Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with teams across the business (including Production Line, Procurement, Quality, and Testing), serve as the technical interface with customers, and oversee the integration of railway vehicle systems into projects.

You’ll specifically take care of leading system engineers in the development and integration of railway vehicle systems, but also ensure that project deliverables are completed on time and within budget.

We’ll look to you for:

  • Providing systems engineering input into fleet modifications, including engineering documentation, risk assessments, and compliance with change management processes

  • Contributing to Asset Life Management (ALM) projects by developing engineering concepts, liaising with suppliers, and ensuring compliance with Design-for-Quality (DfQ) processes

  • Addressing obsolescence issues by assessing fit, form, and function, and delivering necessary engineering documentation

  • Resolving safety and reliability issues through root cause analysis, containment actions, and fleet modifications

  • Collaborating on R&D initiatives, from concept development to delivering engineering outputs and compliance documentation

  • Capturing and sharing Return on Experience to enhance organizational learning

All about you

We value passion and attitude over experience. That’s why we don’t expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we’ve listed some that we think will help you succeed and grow in this role:

  • University degree in Railway Engineering, Electronics, Computer Science, Automation Engineering, or Electrical and Mechanical Engineering

  • At least 15 years of experience in railway vehicle systems engineering or similar heavy industrial vehicle development

  • Direct experience with vehicle design and development, having worked through a full V-cycle of product design

  • Strong knowledge of railway subsystem applications (e.g., Propulsion, Doors, HVAC, ATC, Communications)

  • Experience with Root Cause Analysis and problem-solving methods

  • Proficiency in vehicle test instrumentation and execution of on-vehicle tests

  • Familiarity with systems software design and associated standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 15288)

  • Knowledge of Alstom’s Design-for-Quality processes

  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office and SAP

  • Team leadership and effective communication skills

  • Ability to manage technical risks and evaluate solutions

  • Self-motivation and the ability to work independently

  • A growth mindset with a passion for continuous learning

  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence

Things you’ll enjoy Join us on a life-long transformative journey – the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You’ll also:

  • Enjoy stability, challenges, and a long-term career free from boring daily routines

  • Work with cutting-edge security standards for rail signalling

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and supportive colleagues

  • Contribute to innovative projects that shape the future of mobility

  • Utilise our flexible and inclusive working environment

  • Steer your career in whatever direction you choose across functions and countries

  • Benefit from our investment in your development through award-winning learning programs

  • Progress towards senior leadership roles or specialized technical expertise

  • Benefit from a fair and dynamic reward package that recognizes your performance and potential, plus comprehensive and competitive social coverage (life, medical, pension)

Bilingualism

Proficiency in French and English is required. Knowledge of a third language is considered an asset when working with our international partners, suppliers, colleagues, and customers. In Quebec, French remains the primary working language of our company.
