What is a senior systems engineer?

A senior systems engineer is an IT (information technology) professional tasked with designing and maintaining network systems and security. Examples include large server or storage systems, computer networks, and mainframes. As a systems engineer, your primary duties are to oversee the daily operations of your facility and lead a team of engineers in designing new systems to replace old ones. You may work for a company that provides engineering services and solutions for other businesses, or you may be part of a large university or other institution's IT department. Skills needed for the career include the ability to work independently, leadership, and analytical problem-solving. A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or IT and significant experience in a lower systems engineering position are essential qualifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Systems Engineer, you need expertise in systems architecture, troubleshooting, and network administration, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field and several years of relevant experience. Familiarity with virtualization platforms, cloud services (like AWS or Azure), automation tools (such as Ansible or PowerShell), and certifications like CompTIA, Microsoft, or Cisco are often required. Outstanding problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you lead initiatives and collaborate effectively across teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring system reliability, scalability, and security in complex IT environments.

What are some common challenges faced by senior systems engineers when integrating new technologies into existing infrastructure?

Senior Systems Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between legacy systems and new technologies, minimizing downtime during migrations, and addressing unforeseen security vulnerabilities. Effective integration requires thorough planning, cross-team collaboration, and detailed testing to avoid disruptions to business operations. Staying current with emerging technologies and adopting best practices for change management are essential for overcoming these challenges and ensuring smooth implementation.

What is the difference between Senior Systems Engineer vs Systems Administrator?

Job description

About the Role

Redhorse transforms the way government uses data and technology. To support this mission, we are seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to serve as a technical authority for our most complex Computer Network Operations (CNO) initiatives. In this role, you won't just manage systems—you will architect the future of mission‑critical cyber infrastructure. You will bridge the gap between operational requirements and technical execution, designing scalable environments that support Vulnerability Research (VR), Reverse Engineering (RE), and Computer Network Exploitation (CNE). If you are a strategic thinker who enjoys solving high‑stakes technical puzzles and leading multidisciplinary teams, this is a pivotal opportunity to drive innovation in national security.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary technical authority for system architecture decisions and integration strategies across the mission enterprise.
  • Lead the design and implementation of complex systems that integrate proprietary computer, mobile, and networking technologies.
  • Develop enterprise-level architectures that unify applications, data sources, and cyber capabilities into cohesive operational environments.
  • Architect specialized system solutions tailored for Vulnerability Research (VR), Reverse Engineering (RE), and CNE development.
  • Conduct rigorous systems analysis and technical configuration for emerging mission‑critical infrastructure.
  • Evaluate and recommend emerging technologies for mission applicability, ensuring long‑term scalability and sustainability.
  • Produce high‑level technical artifacts, including architecture diagrams, implementation plans, and Disaster Recovery strategies.
  • Provide mentorship and technical leadership to engineering teams, ensuring quality assurance and adherence to best practices.
  • Collaborate directly with government stakeholders to translate mission objectives into robust, modern technical roadmaps.
Required Experience / Clearance
  • Active TS/SCI security clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • 8+ years of experience in systems engineering, including the design and integration of enterprise‑scale systems.
  • 5+ years of experience specifically supporting Computer Network Operations (CNO) environments.
  • Demonstrated experience designing systems that support VR, RE, or CNE capability development.
  • Proven expertise in engineering Linux‑based infrastructure and services in a mission‑focused environment.
  • Experience leading the full system lifecycle, from architecture and testing to deployment and sustainment.
  • Advanced proficiency in creating technical documentation, including SOPs and system administration guides.
Desired Experience
  • Experience engineering solutions across a variety of platforms including macOS, iOS, Android, and Windows.
  • Familiarity with high‑level and low‑level programming languages such as Python, C, Go, or Java.
  • Strong understanding of networking architectures, communication protocols, and internet technologies.
  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Podman) and virtualization technologies.
  • Familiarity with cloud‑native technologies and distributed system architectures.
  • Previous experience working in highly classified, fast‑paced operational environments.
