What is a senior systems engineer?

A senior systems engineer is an IT (information technology) professional tasked with designing and maintaining network systems and security. Examples include large server or storage systems, computer networks, and mainframes. As a systems engineer, your primary duties are to oversee the daily operations of your facility and lead a team of engineers in designing new systems to replace old ones. You may work for a company that provides engineering services and solutions for other businesses, or you may be part of a large university or other institution's IT department. Skills needed for the career include the ability to work independently, leadership, and analytical problem-solving. A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or IT and significant experience in a lower systems engineering position are essential qualifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Systems Engineer, you need expertise in systems architecture, troubleshooting, and network administration, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field and several years of relevant experience. Familiarity with virtualization platforms, cloud services (like AWS or Azure), automation tools (such as Ansible or PowerShell), and certifications like CompTIA, Microsoft, or Cisco are often required. Outstanding problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you lead initiatives and collaborate effectively across teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring system reliability, scalability, and security in complex IT environments.

What are some common challenges faced by senior systems engineers when integrating new technologies into existing infrastructure?

Senior Systems Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between legacy systems and new technologies, minimizing downtime during migrations, and addressing unforeseen security vulnerabilities. Effective integration requires thorough planning, cross-team collaboration, and detailed testing to avoid disruptions to business operations. Staying current with emerging technologies and adopting best practices for change management are essential for overcoming these challenges and ensuring smooth implementation.

Company Overview
Dignitas Technologies, a By Light company, offers a wide range of services in the military modeling, simulation, and training (MS&T) industry from research efforts advancing simulation technologies to large acquisition contracts. Dignitas specializes in system and software analysis, design, development, testing, fielding, and courseware for Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) training applications.

Headquartered in McLean, VA, By Light supports defense, civilian, and commercial IT customers worldwide.
Position Overview
The Senior Systems Engineer will play a critical role in the planning, development, and execution of delivery orders (DOs), contributing both as a technical leader and hands-on engineer. This role requires close collaboration with internal teams and government stakeholders and may involve occasional travel to customer sites or test events. A hybrid work environment is possible when not required to be on-site for customer meetings or test events. The program reserves the right to require on-site work if program execution and success dictates.
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and support the development of delivery orders (DOs) from initiation through completion on military simulation system applications
  • Analyze, decompose, and define systems-level requirements aligned with customer needs
  • Design system architectures and ensure integration across multiple subsystems
  • Develop and execute system verification and validation plans
  • Coordinate and participate in milestone testing events with government customers
  • Coordinate, develop, and deliver technical CDRL documentation in accordance with project DD-1423 and DID requirements
  • Coordinate and direct project staff to develop operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting scenarios
  • Ensure technical performance, quality, and compliance with contractual requirements
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including software, graphics, and program management
  • Serve as the primary technical interface with customers, stakeholders, and end users - building and maintaining relationships throughout the project lifecycle
  • Organize and conduct integration events, technical briefings, and planning events for audiences ranging from instructors and subject matter experts (SMEs) to requirements owners and program leadership
  • Identify risks and develop mitigation strategies throughout the system lifecycle
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers

Required Experience/Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in systems engineering or related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience with systems engineering lifecycle processes (requirements, design, integration, test, and verification)

    • Certified Scrum Product Owner or Certified Scrum Master is a plus
  • Experience with development in high fidelity game engines (Unity Preferred)
  • MS Office applications including MS Project
  • Experience working with government customers and understanding of DoD acquisition processes
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to lead technical efforts and manage competing priorities

Preferred Experience/Qualifications
  • Experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools and methodologies
  • Familiarity with systems engineering standards (e.g., INCOSE, ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288)
  • Prior experience supporting defense or aerospace programs

Special Requirements/Security Clearance
  • Ability to obtain a Security Clearance
