Job description

REPORTS TO: Athletics Director

PAY TYPE: Stipend, Non-Supervisory

PAY RATE: Based upon the WLCSC Master Teacher Contract (see attachment)

BENEFITS: Not eligible

SCHEDULE: Seasonal; Hours vary based upon practices, events, and program needs

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Leads, plans, and directs an education-based athletics program that seeks to develop athletes of empathy and integrity
  • Accepts and implements the co-curricular philosophy of the West Lafayette Junior-Senior High School
  • Follows the rules and regulations of the School, the Hoosier Conference, and the IHSAA
  • Attends the rules interpretation meeting held by the IHSAA
  • Maintains membership in the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches and participates so that the School has representation
  • Attends clinics, seminars, and in-service programs in order to improve coaching skills and stay current with new trends in coaching, training, conditioning, and safety procedures
  • Attends school, conference, and sectional coaches meetings
  • Gives input about, and carries out the interscholastic schedule as drawn up by the Athletics Director
  • Organizes, schedules, and supervises practice sessions
  • Submits and verifies transportation requests for scrimmages, practices, and events
  • Supervises the usage of equipment in the assigned sport
  • Assists with the development of a written annual inventory and makes recommendations for purchases to the Athletics Director
  • Oversees the distribution and collection of equipment and supplies
  • Regularly inspects equipment and facilities to ensure the safety of each student‑athlete
  • Develops fundraising strategies to help support programming needs and wants
  • Responsible for reporting scores and disseminating team information for publicity
  • Participates in pre- and post-season meetings with the Athletics Director. The post-season meeting will serve as an evaluation conference
  • Delegates responsibility to the assistant coaches as appropriate
  • Provides leadership in their program for all levels (youth programs, junior‑high, junior varsity, and varsity) of the sport
  • Only allows athletes certified by the Athletics Office to participate
  • Maintains appropriate supervision of their program at all times (locker rooms, practices, events, bus rides, etc.)
  • Assures that the team will reflect proper attitude and conduct at all times
  • Encourages youth to participate in sports and other co-curricular activities other than their own, but without attempting to influence the specific sport or activity
  • Establishes and uses a system of communication to athletes and parents that includes an explanation of program policies, awards, procedures, goals, and schedules
  • Responsible for the end‑of‑season awards programs
  • Represents the School in a professional manner in demeanor, language, and conduct based upon standards established by the Athletics Director
  • Develops and maintains current knowledge of the activity/sport
  • Other duties as assigned by the Athletics Director
  • Subject to annual performance evaluation by the Principal and Athletics Director
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
  • Education, Training, and Experience Required:
    • Must meet all head coaching requirements established by the IHSAA & IDOE
    • Prior coaching experience in an education-based athletics program
    • Cross country and/or coaching experience preferred
    • Employment status as a certified teacher preferred
    • Completion of InSideOut Initiative training required (or willingness to complete upon hire)

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Position requires work in gymnasiums, athletic facilities, and outdoor environments as applicable and appropriate
  • Requires evening, weekend, and travel commitments
  • May involve exposure to loud environments and physically active settings
  • Requires standing, walking, and active participation during practices and events
