What does a senior fiber manager do?

A Senior Fiber Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning, deployment, and maintenance of fiber optic networks, typically for telecommunications or internet service providers. They manage teams, coordinate with contractors, ensure project timelines are met, and handle budgeting and resource allocation. Their role also involves ensuring the network meets quality standards and adheres to safety regulations. Additionally, Senior Fiber Managers often interact with clients and stakeholders to align network expansion with business goals.

What are some common challenges faced by senior fiber managers, and how can they be addressed?

Senior Fiber Managers often encounter challenges such as coordinating large-scale fiber deployment projects, navigating complex permitting processes, and managing cross-functional teams with diverse expertise. Addressing these challenges involves strong project management skills, effective communication with stakeholders, and staying updated on industry regulations and best practices. Building strong relationships with local authorities and utilities can also help streamline approvals and minimize delays, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior fiber manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Fiber Manager, you need expertise in fiber optic network design, project management, and a solid understanding of telecommunications infrastructure, often supported by a relevant degree and industry experience. Familiarity with GIS mapping tools, fiber management software, and certifications such as CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) are typically important. Strong leadership, negotiation, and communication skills help in managing teams, coordinating with stakeholders, and resolving complex challenges. These skills ensure successful deployment and maintenance of fiber networks, meeting project goals and supporting organizational growth.

What is the difference between Senior Fiber Manager vs Fiber Project Coordinator?

AspectSenior Fiber ManagerFiber Project Coordinator

Job description

Position Summary:
We are seeking experienced Senior Fiber Optic Splicers to support fiber break/fix, remediation, testing and restoration activities within an active hyperscale data center environment.
This is a production-level position for technicians who can independently diagnose and resolve fiber defects in both live/in-service and non-live fiber environments. The technician will be expected to own assigned defects from initial ticket review through repair, testing, documentation and closure.
Candidates must have recent, hands-on experience with single-fiber fusion splicing, ribbon/mass fusion splicing, SC connectivity, MTP/MPO systems and MMC high-density fiber connectivity. This is not a learn-on-the-job position, and routine technical issues should be resolved without requiring escalation back to the client.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform single-mode, single-fiber fusion splicing using repeatable fiber preparation, cleaving and splicing procedures.
  • Perform 12-fiber ribbon and mass fusion splicing, including ribboning fibers from loose-tube cable.
  • Work with SC, MTP/MPO and MMC fiber connectivity in high-density data center environments.
  • Install and repair splice-on connectors, pigtails, fan-outs and related fiber assemblies.
  • Diagnose and repair defects identified through audits, inspections, testing or trouble tickets.
  • Interpret fiber drawings, cable schedules, port assignments, splice plans and methods of procedure.
  • Understand MTP/MPO polarity methods, including Methods A, B and C.
  • Verify MTP/MPO key orientation, pinned versus non-pinned configurations, gender and trunk/harness/cassette architecture.
  • Perform OTDR testing and interpret traces to identify events, excessive loss, reflections, breaks and fault locations.
  • Conduct insertion-loss testing using optical light sources and power meters.
  • Verify results against applicable loss budgets and project acceptance requirements.
  • Inspect and clean SC, MPO and other fiber end faces using appropriate inspection probes and cleaning tools.
  • Apply end face pass/fail standards consistent with project requirements and IEC 61300-3-35.
  • Follow live-environment safety procedures and never inspect an energized fiber directly.
  • Work strictly according to the approved ticket and method of procedure.
  • Avoid disconnecting, moving or disturbing fiber components that are not included in the assigned scope.
  • Document repairs, test results, photographs and supporting evidence before closing tickets.
  • Provide required morning, progress and end-of-day status updates.
  • Maintain splicing machines, cleavers, testing equipment and inspection tools in proper working condition.
  • Follow site safety requirements, including ladder, fall-protection, access-control and tool-control procedures.
Required Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated professional experience performing fiber fusion splicing in data center, colocation, enterprise or mission-critical environments.
  • Recent hands-on experience working with live/in-service fiber infrastructure.
  • Production-level proficiency in:
    • Single-fiber fusion splicing
    • Ribbon or mass fusion splicing
    • Ribboning loose-tube fiber
    • SC terminations and patching
    • MTP/MPO connectivity
    • MMC high-density connectivity
  • Ability to independently diagnose, repair, test and close fiber defects.
  • Hands-on experience operating core-alignment fusion splicers such as:
    • Fujikura 70S/90S series
    • Sumitomo Type-72/Q-series
    • Comparable professional fusion-splicing equipment
  • Proficiency with OTDRs, optical power meters, light sources and fiber inspection microscopes.
  • Ability to interpret OTDR traces rather than only operate the test equipment.
  • Understanding of insertion loss, loss budgets, splice-loss thresholds, reflectance and fiber cleanliness.
  • Ability to read fiber drawings, port maps, cable schedules and technical procedures.
  • Strong documentation and ticket-closure discipline.
  • Ability to work independently without routine client escalation.
  • Comfortable working in a safety-controlled, construction-oriented data center environment.

Experience Guideline:
Three or more years of directly relevant fiber-splicing experience is preferred. However, demonstrated capability with live data-center fiber, ribbon splicing, MPO/MMC and OTDR interpretation should carry more weight than total years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • FOA Certified Fiber Optic Technician - CFOT
  • FOA Certified Fiber Optic Specialist in Splicing - CFOS/S
  • BICSI Installer or Technician certification
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
  • Previous hyperscale data center experience
  • Previous experience on Turner-managed construction sites
  • Experience supporting fiber audits, remediation or live-network restoration
  • Ownership of professional hand tools, fiber preparation tools or inspection equipment
