Job description

TransCore (TCI), a subsidiary of ST Engineering, is seeking a full-time Senior Fiber Optic Splicer to join our team in Tampa, Florida.

Summary: The primary responsibilities of the Senior Fiber Optic Splicer will be to fusion splice fiber optic cables in both outdoor and indoor settings. Read, create and maintain splicing schematics and diagrams and maintain control of outside plant (OSP) activities surrounding the assigned work site(s). Take and maintain accurate splicing and field notes, support project timelines, and inspect, design and provide accurate records for projects.  Manage/assign the daily workload of the fiber optic splicing team.  This position requires field work, which may include overtime, weekends, holidays, and out-of-normal work hours. Travel will be required and may be up to 50%, depending on the business needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

Other duties, responsibilities, and requirements may be assigned and/or required.  

  • Installation, preventive, and corrective maintenance of fiber optic cables and network communications equipment
  • Completes reports, logs, and performs shift-to-shift communications in accordance with established policies, procedures, and local practices
  • Responds to corrective maintenance requests or alarms within the contract-required time frame.
  • Diagnoses and repairs hardware, software, and system issues
  • Reports the technical status of the system with accuracy and completeness
  • Restores equipment to operational status as quickly as possible.
  • Isolation of faults in units or components
  • Field test of units or components to ensure they work correctly before leaving the work area.
  • Maintenance of spare equipment and parts following the company-established policies and guidelines
  • Manages/trains less experienced technicians

Education and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.

Required Technical Skills & Competencies:

  • Must complete required background/drug screening successfully that TransCore initiates as part of the hiring process; additionally, successfully complete a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and State Law Enforcement Radio System (SLERS) background screen when required by project.
  • Must be willing and able to work outdoors in various weather conditions; work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed and required
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record; driving is required for the position.
  • Eligible candidate must have a minimum of 5 years of knowledge and experience in the following fields:
    • Able to splice fiber optic cables, including loose tube, ribbon, and high-density cables
    • Able to construct a proper splice case for butt, and mid-sheath splices, including but not limited to grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage, and sealing
    • Able to prepare and maintain splicing records, schematics, and diagrams
    • Able to operate and produce reports on using an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (ODTR)
  • Eligible candidate must obtain an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Signal Technician Level I certification within one year of employment, and IMSA Signal Technician II certification within two years of employment.

Desired Technical Skills & Competencies:  

  • Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) certification preferred but not required
  • Ability to read roadway plans
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications (Office/Visio)

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions and moving traffic.
