Description
Position Overview
The Fiber Optic Installation Project Manager is responsible for planning, estimating, coordinating, and overseeing fiber optic installation projects across inside plant (ISP), outside plant (OSP), and campus environments. This role ensures all project phases-from initial walk-through to final testing-are executed with technical accuracy, safety, efficiency, and high customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate has a strong technical background in fiber installation, splicing, and testing, coupled with excellent communication and leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Execution
  • Lead the full lifecycle of fiber installation projects, including assessing customer needs, conducting on-site walk-throughs, and developing scopes of work.
  • Create detailed project documentation, including bill of materials (BOMs), labor estimates, and implementation plans.
  • Oversee installation, splicing, termination, and testing for ISP, OSP, and campus fiber systems.
  • Ensure equipment, materials, and labor are scheduled and coordinated efficiently to meet project timelines.

Technical Expertise
  • Apply thorough knowledge of fiber optic technology, including installation techniques, cable types, pathways, and industry best practices.
  • Utilize advanced understanding of fiber jetting equipment, including AFL and Sumitomo systems.
  • Oversee and guide field teams in the use of fusion splicers, OTDRs, power meters, and other testing tools.
  • Provide troubleshooting assistance to resolve fiber performance or construction issues.

Field Team Leadership
  • Manage, guide, and support fiber technicians working in the field.
  • Communicate effectively at a technician's level to anticipate needs, remove obstacles, and ensure project accuracy.
  • Maintain real-time oversight of field progress to keep projects moving smoothly.

Customer Communication & Support
  • Maintain strong, professional customer relationships by clearly explaining proposed solutions, work requirements, and project status.
  • Consult with clients to help determine the best fiber solutions for their environments.
  • Conduct pre- and post-installation meetings, providing clear expectations and project updates.

  • Individual will be required to travel to customer sites as needed.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock.
  • Individual may occasionally be required to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Incumbent will be required to use a computer with keyboard, telephone or handheld mobile device for extended periods of time, and office machinery as needed.
  • Incumbent must be able to read, see, hear, and speak.

Work Days and Shifts:
Position works Monday-Friday, daylight hours, and additional time as needed to complete work.
Requirements
Education/Certification(s)/License(s) required:
  • Industry certifications (FOA CFOT, ETA, BICSI, or similar).
  • Experience reading blueprints, construction drawings, and fiber network maps.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and codes relevant to OSP/ISP fiber work.
  • May be required to participate in safety trainings and/or certifications provided by the Company or customers.
  • Valid driver's license is required, as employee will be required to travel to client site as needed.

Experience/Other required:
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience working the technology industry; previous experience with project management is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and CRM software.
  • Experience with Microsoft Project is preferred.
  • General knowledge of electronic services industry (Voice, Data, Security, Multimedia, and/or Structured Cabling) is a plus.
  • Previous experience in Purchasing is a plus.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This is a full-time, in-person position, and candidates must be able to work from our office located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
