A Senior Engineering Manager is a seasoned leader responsible for overseeing multiple engineering teams or large projects within an organization. They manage engineering managers or team leads, set technical direction, and ensure alignment with business goals. Their duties include mentoring staff, driving process improvements, managing budgets, and collaborating with other departments. Senior Engineering Managers play a key role in hiring, performance evaluations, and fostering a productive engineering culture. They typically have extensive industry experience and strong leadership skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior engineering manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Engineering Manager, you need a robust background in engineering principles, leadership experience, and a relevant degree, often complemented by prior management roles. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), software development methodologies (like Agile), and technical certifications can be highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and mentoring skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are vital for effectively guiding teams, delivering projects on time, and fostering an innovative and collaborative engineering environment.

What is a senior engineering manager?

A Senior Engineering Manager often splits their time between guiding technical strategy and supporting their team’s professional development. This involves overseeing complex engineering projects, setting clear technical direction, and ensuring best practices are followed, while also mentoring engineers, conducting performance reviews, and fostering a collaborative team culture. Balancing these areas requires strong delegation, prioritization, and communication skills, as well as regularly collaborating with other departments like Product and Design to align goals. Most organizations expect Senior Engineering Managers to actively contribute to both technical and people-focused initiatives, which can be challenging but is essential for team and project success.

The Director, Engineering - Leader within Corporate Services Technology, supporting Accounting, is a senior engineering leader accountable for the technical direction, delivery, and operational excellence of Accounting technology platforms. This role directly manages software engineers and works closely with engineering teams to design, build, integrate, and operate secure, scalable solutions. The role partners with Accounting leadership, architects, and vendors, and is grounded in software engineering excellence, modern architecture, and reliable execution supporting Accounting capabilities, including financial close, general ledger, intercompany, investment accounting, digital assets accounting, regulatory and statutory reporting, and global compliance requirements across complex multi-entity environments.

The Expertise You Have

  • Deep software engineering leadership experience delivering enterprise platforms in regulated environments.
  • Experience directly managing engineers responsible for full lifecycle delivery, including design, development, testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Strong engineering background across full-stack development, including modern front-end frameworks (e.g., Angular), back-end services (Java, APIs, microservices), and relational databases such as Oracle.
  • Demonstrated experience with cloud-native architectures, including application deployment and operations on AWS, CI/CD pipelines, and containerized environments.
  • Experience managing vendor and platform partnerships, aligning roadmaps, integrations using APIs, event-driven, and secure integration patterns, and operational expectations aligned to Accounting and regulatory reporting priorities.
  • Strong understanding of secure engineering practices, data governance, records retention, and compliance controls in regulated financial environments.
  • Experience building or operating systems supporting high-risk domains such as general ledger, close and consolidation, investment accounting, digital assets, tax, intercompany, regulatory reporting, or financial data management platforms.
  • Proven partnership experience with Accounting, Risk and Corporate Services stakeholders, framing complex technical topics as decisions, risks, and options, while maintaining strong engineering standards.
  • Preferred understanding of Accounting processes, including Record-to-Report, Procure-to-Pay, intercompany accounting, fixed assets, digital assets, and financial close processes across global, multi-entity organizations.
  • Preferred experience with enterprise financial systems and a strong appreciation for how accounting processes translate into scalable system design, data models, and integrations.
  • Preferred experience supporting finance transformation initiatives including ERP modernization and AI enablement.
  • Preferred strong understanding of financial controls, audit requirements (e.g., SOX), regulatory compliance, and the importance of traceability, reconciliation, and data integrity in financial systems.

The Skills You Bring

  • Hands-on engineering leadership capability, including reviewing designs, guiding implementation approaches, and coaching engineers on code quality, architecture, and operational readiness.
  • Ability to design and evolve scalable, maintainable systems while balancing delivery commitments and technical debt.
  • Strong execution leadership skills, including sprint planning, driving cross-team alignment on dependencies, risks, and release readiness, and maintaining predictable delivery across multiple initiatives
  • Comfort operating across the full software development lifecycle, from early requirements through post-release support and incident management.
  • Ability to partner effectively with architects, platform teams, and security partners to align solutions with enterprise standards.
  • Clear and confident communication skills to explain complex technical topics to Accounting partners and senior leaders.
  • Change leadership mindset that promotes adoption of modern engineering practices, automation, and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, with a proactive approach to staying current on emerging technologies, evolving accounting standards, and modern enterprise architecture patterns.
  • Intellectual curiosity and ownership mindset to self-educate in new domains (e.g., regulatory changes, financial data models, or new platforms) without reliance on formal training.

The Value You Deliver

  • Deliver reliable, high-quality Accounting technology platforms built on modern engineering practices and architectures.
  • Improve platform stability, scalability, and delivery predictability through strong engineering discipline and hands-on leadership.
  • Reduce operational and regulatory risk by ensuring systems are secure, well-governed, and production-ready.
  • Elevate engineering capabilities through technical mentorship, coaching, and accountability for outcomes.
  • Enable Accounting and Corporate Services to achieve strategic objectives with technology that is resilient, scalable, and fit for purpose.
