Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineer information

What does a Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineer do?

A Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineer is responsible for ensuring that semiconductor products meet quality and reliability standards throughout their lifecycle. They design and implement tests to evaluate product reliability, analyze failure data, and work with design and manufacturing teams to address any issues. Their role is crucial in identifying potential defects early and ensuring that products perform consistently under various conditions. This helps minimize failures in the field and maintains customer trust in the company's products.

What are the main challenges Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineers face when working with new technology nodes?

Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineers working with new technology nodes often encounter challenges such as managing unknown failure mechanisms, ensuring device reliability under accelerated testing, and adapting to rapidly evolving process changes. These engineers must collaborate closely with design, process, and manufacturing teams to identify potential risks early and develop robust reliability test plans. Staying up-to-date with industry standards and best practices is crucial to address these challenges effectively and maintain product quality throughout the development cycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, materials science, and semiconductor device physics, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in quality control or reliability testing. Familiarity with reliability analysis tools (like Weibull analysis), failure analysis techniques, and quality management systems (such as ISO 9001) is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective cross-functional communication set outstanding professionals apart in this role. These skills ensure product reliability, compliance with industry standards, and the delivery of high-quality semiconductor devices to market.

What is the difference between Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineer vs Semiconductor Process Engineer?

AspectSemiconductor Quality Reliability EngineerSemiconductor Process Engineer
Primary FocusEnsuring product reliability and quality through testing and analysisDeveloping and optimizing manufacturing processes for semiconductor fabrication
Required SkillsReliability testing, failure analysis, quality standardsProcess development, equipment operation, process control

Job description

Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all.

Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.

About our Team:
As a Product Quality and Reliability Assurance (PQRA) Qualification Engineer passionate about Aerospace & Defense (A&D) at Micron Technology, Inc., you will lead both qualification and ongoing monitoring of DRAM, NAND, and memory products. These products are built for high reliability and critical use cases. You will collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, and external partners to ensure qualification, screening, and acceptance practices are accomplished accurately. You will also develop reliability methodologies, assess product performance, and drive continuous improvement aligned to A&D standards and expectations.

Position Overview:
In this role, you will establish and enforce requirements, including specifications, Defects per Million (DPM) or equivalent experience, Failure In Time (FIT), and lifetime or mission profile expectations. You will ensure these meet customer and industry standards, such as NASA/GSFC PEMINST001 and relevant military standards. You will perform risk assessments, respond to product deviations, support manufacturing teams with reliability issues, and build deep product, process, and standards knowledge. Travel may be required 1-3 times per year, with durations of 3-10 days for domestic and international trips.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct New Product Qualification (including A&D qualification and lotlevel upscreening), define qualification and acceptance requirements for commercial, automotivebaseline, and A&D variants, and review qualification and upscreening data to ensure requirements are met, including issuing product release notifications and lot acceptance dispositions

  • Understand DRAM/NAND failure mechanisms, A&D environmental stressors, packaging integrity concerns, and perform risk assessments across qualification cycles evaluating standards gaps, mission profiles, and traceability requirements

  • Develop Product Reliability Methodology, Monitors, Metrics, and Specifications by coordinating with R&D, test, package reliability, and product engineering teams; maintain reliability tests and monitor strategies aligned to PEMINST001 and internal governance processes

  • Develop and maintain quality and reliability requirements, including FIT, lifetime, mission profiles, DPM/PPM, screening yield limits, and excursion risk, while assessing deviations, defining containment actions, supporting change analysis, and driving disposition decisions (ship/hold/scrap/rework)

  • Provide internal technical support for customer support teams, assist with RMA analysis, supply manufacturing history and traceability, prepare qualification summaries and audit responses, maintain Reliability Process Monitor (RPM) plans, and support corrective actions across manufacturing and suppliers

  • Guide and consult by supporting qualification reviews, preparing compliance evidence packages, working with engineering and test partners, and maintaining knowledge of standards such as PEMINST001, AS6294, MILSTD883/750, and MILPRF38535

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S or Equivalent in EE or related field of study

  • 3+ years of experience in semiconductor quality, reliability, product engineering, or qualification (DRAM/NAND preferred); experience supporting Aerospace & Defense and/or highreliability programs strongly preferred

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications

  • Knowledge of DRAM, NAND, VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration), semiconductor physics, and semiconductor manufacturing (wafer fab, assembly, and test)

  • Demonstrated ability to lead multi-functional qualification activities and drive decisions using data, risk assessment, and clear user documentation

  • Experience collaborating with customers and auditors, developing evidence packages, and supporting corrective action closure in regulated or highreliability environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with data analysis and scripting or automation tools (e.g., Python, Perl, C++, Java)

  • Solid understanding of aerospace and military microelectronics standards and flows, including NASA/GSFC PEMINST001 and SAE AS6294

  • Familiarity with military test and qualification frameworks such as MILSTD883, MILSTD750, MILPRF38535, and configuration control and traceability expectations

  • Awareness of radiation reliability concepts such as Total Ionizing Dose (TID) and Single Event Effects (SEE) and their impact on qualification strategies

  • Experience working with external test houses, screening processes, and audit readiness expectations

  • Comfortable leveraging AI tools to increase efficiency.
