Job description

The MFAH is an organization that is more than 100 years old and ranks nationally among the top 10 art museums in exhibition space, memberships, endowments, and attendance. The MFAH is a multifaceted institution comprising multiple gallery buildings, a sculpture garden, two art schools, and two house-museums for decorative arts. The encyclopedic collection numbers more than 65,000 works of art in a wide range of media. The MFAH is currently seeking a dependable, protection professional with demonstrated leadership skills and a strong sense of integrity. The Security Manager plays the critical role of leading a team of Security Officers who are tasked with protecting objects on display and maintaining order in their assigned galleries or those assigned to maintain order, reduce injury, assist visitors, and reduce property loss at the Museum.
Position Available:

Reports to: Assistant Head of Security - Galleries
Classification: Exempt
Schedule: 40-hour work week (Wed-Sun but they will be required to work on Monday holidays and occasionally on other days)

Salary: $49,490/yr
Job Summary:
The Security Manager reports directly to the Assistant Head of Security Galleries and is responsible for providing day-to-day leadership to a team of security officers.
As the first level of management, the Security Manager is the face of the department to guests, volunteers, and staff. In this role, you will oversee teams of security officers who are responsible for ensuring both the physical security of the facilities and its assets, as well as the safety of all occupants the protection of Museum gallery spaces, the objects therein and the safety of all occupants by observing, reporting, and responding to activities within their assigned galleries.
Leadership Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct leadership to team of up to 20 Security Officers
  • Conduct roll call, take attendance and make daily post assignments
  • Counsel Security Officers, both verbally and in writing, related to job performance
  • Partner with the AHSO to complete performance evaluations
  • Complete written reports on security- and safety-related incidents
  • Conduct individual and group training sessions on security related topics
  • Conduct Security briefings and orientations for new Security team members as needed
  • Implement museum and security department policies and procedures fairly and consistently
  • Mentor, train, and develop staff.
  • Maintain a visible presence in assigned galleries to provide leadership and assist Museum guests.
  • Create a detailed end-of-shift report containing relevant daily information to share with incoming Security Manager(s) and Security Officers to ensure all shifts are informed of museum activities and incidents

General Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for coordinating and supervising the daily operations of the MFAH's Security Officers; this includes daily report writing, security officer scheduling, performance management, payroll processing and the completion of comprehensive incident reports
  • Ensure security officers maintain a neat and tidy appearance at all times in accordance with established security department guidelines and carry required equipment
  • Accountable for the personal safety of all occupants of any MFAH-owned facilities and ensures the protection of all MFAH-owned assets
  • Verifies all third-parties (such as caterers, vendors, contractors, and other affiliates) follow MFAH Security policies and procedures and is able to apply corrective measures as necessary
  • Interact with guests to give directions, provide information and consistently enforce museum rules
  • Thoroughly and routinely conducts the MFAH Security opening and closing procedures for all MFAH-owned properties, ensuring that all facilities remain secure
  • Serves as a member of the museum emergency response team, this position is designated as an Essential Employee and may be required to report to work, or to remain at work, during inclement weather or other emergency situations
  • Provides guidance, solutions, and resources for all MFAH staff, and its affiliates, in relation to Security procedural issues or incidents and ensures the adherence of all MFAH Security procedures, processes, and policies
  • Appropriately escalates Security issues and work performance issues to the proper personnel as necessary
  • Ensure adherence to department procedures, processes, and policies
  • Maintains and fosters effective working relationships with individuals and departments across a variety of areas within the MFAH
  • Participate in department projects and initiatives and provide knowledge and leadership in cross-functional project teams
  • Act as a resource for staff on procedural questions and concerns; provide solutions and escalate certain issues to the appropriate personnel
  • Receive, address, and record accolades, comments and complaints from guests
  • Manages and monitors Security staffing to ensure an adequate level of security coverage is provided at all times
  • Issue and collect equipment such as uniforms, radios and keys
  • Ensure security officers understand and comply with post and special orders, department policies and operating procedures
  • Take charge of assigned areas during building evacuations and other emergencies; ensure that security officers are knowledgeable of emergency procedures

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
  • Strong customer service mindset with ability to interact with the public to analyze situations and anticipate needs of guests
  • Demonstrated track record of managing a diverse work force, including hiring, training and motivating staff
  • Must be proficient in English, both written and verbal communications skills
  • Present a neat and tidy appearance at all times in accordance with established security department guidelines
  • Ability to write clear concise preliminary investigative reports, interview witnesses, victims, etc.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts if needed and to work special events going past shifts schedule
  • Sound decision-making abilities
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Responder, CPR and other related certifications on a yearly basis
  • Ability to administer First Aid and CPR, including carrying first aid equipment and assisting with lifting and moving victims, if required
  • Possess outstanding customer service skills and the ability to remain calm in the face of diverse and high stress encounters, i.e.: fire, medical emergency, extremely aggravated guests, and workplace violence situations
  • Possess basic computer skills and be able to learn software applications used by the department
  • Ability to use radios, telephones and other equipment that may be assigned
  • May be designated as "essential personnel" and required to report to work or remain at work during inclement weather or other emergency situations

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree and/or five years of related experience
  • Must have a minimum of three years of experience in directly supervising and managing a team of security employees
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office and have basic business acumen
  • Qualifications also include a clear criminal background report, must be 18 years of age or older and have the ability to perform all tasks required of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Must have in good standing or be qualified to obtain - level 2 Non-Commissioned Security Guard license with Texas Department of Public Safety
  • Security personnel must pass a national criminal background check in order to maintain non-commission status through the Texas Commission on Private Security
  • All applicants are required to have a valid state issued ID or driver license in order to complete the application process
  • Bilingual is preferred

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods including using stairs
  • Must have accurate vision (22/20 or 20/40 with corrective lens acceptable).
  • Ability to distinguish standard colors
  • Ability to hear normal conversation at a distance of 15 feet
  • Must be able to lift, push and pull 50 lbs.
  • Duties require standing for long periods of time and/or walking distances and climbing stairs throughout the work shift
  • Working conditions may be indoors or outside, depending on assignment. When working outside, inclement weather may also be a working condition
