Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

The Second Engineer typically earns a higher salary than the Third Engineer due to increased responsibilities, experience, and certifications. Both roles are essential in maritime engine rooms, but the Second Engineer's position involves more complex maintenance and management tasks, which are reflected in their compensation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Second Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Second Engineer, you need a solid background in marine engineering, a relevant engineering license (such as STCW III/2), and strong knowledge of ship systems and maintenance procedures. Familiarity with engine room automation systems, maintenance software, and compliance with international maritime regulations is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of a vessel's engine room, directly impacting the ship's overall performance.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Second Engineer onboard a commercial vessel?

A Second Engineer is primarily responsible for overseeing the daily operation and maintenance of the ship's engine room and machinery. This includes managing the engine crew, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and performing routine inspections and repairs. Second Engineers often work closely with the Chief Engineer, assisting in planning maintenance schedules and troubleshooting technical issues. This role requires strong teamwork, technical expertise, and the ability to respond quickly to mechanical emergencies.

What is the average salary of a Second Engineer on a ship?

The average salary of a Second Engineer (also known as First Assistant Engineer) on a ship varies depending on factors like vessel type, company, experience, and nationality. Generally, Second Engineers can expect to earn between $4,500 and $8,500 per month on merchant vessels. Offshore and specialized vessels may offer higher salaries, sometimes exceeding $10,000 per month. Benefits such as contract length, bonuses, and allowances can also impact overall compensation.

Job description

This is a job that Jill, our AI Recruiter, is recruiting for on behalf of one of our customers.
She will pick the best candidates from Jack's network
The next step is to speak to Jack.
Job Title: Founding Engineer
Salary: $160k-$250k + Equity
Company Description: Tightrope AI, Inc. - $7M seed-funded startup turning any website into a programmable API.
Job Description:
As our second engineer, you will build the infrastructure that makes browser automation safe, reliable, and deterministic. Working alongside founders from Merge, Stytch, and Coinbase, you'll solve the "deceptively hard" problem of extracting data from legacy systems without APIs, directly shaping a product used by enterprise leaders in healthcare and finance.
Location: San Francisco, USA
Why this role is remarkable:
  • Join a world-class founding team with deep expertise in integration and auth infrastructure from high-growth scale-ups like Merge, Stytch, and Coinbase.
  • Backed by $7M from Amplify Partners, the early investors in industry-defining tools like Modal, Langchain, and Hightouch.
  • Directly influence the technical trajectory of an AI-native platform that treats the browser as the universal integration layer for legacy enterprise software.

What you will do:
  • Build and maintain production-grade backend systems using Python and React to enable seamless, multi-step web automation workflows.
  • Design secure credential handling and human-in-the-loop approval gates for complex enterprise authentication flows including SSO and 2FA.
  • Collaborate closely with the founders to talk to customers and translate their integration pain points into robust, self-healing technical solutions.

The ideal candidate:
  • A backend-leaning full-stack engineer with a proven track record of building production systems at fast-paced, high-growth B2B startups.
  • Strong engineering judgment and the ability to navigate ambiguity while maintaining a high bar for craft and code quality.
  • Based in (or willing to relocate to) San Francisco for a collaborative, four-day-per-week in-office culture.
