Job description

Summary or Purpose To gain the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to Service, Diagnose and Repair light, medium and heavy duty fire equipment and apparatus. Perform Minor and Major repairs to include over hauling engines, drive train, hydraulic systems and electrical systems. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification.

Respond to emergencies and performs firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical duties.

Demonstrates continuous improvement towards achieving the Heavy Equipment Mechanic Trainee performance objectives; Daily inspections, fueling, check fluid levels, lighting, tires and startup and safety inspections of equipment. Schedule and perform routine preventative maintenance on all apparatus. Perform minor and major repairs to include all aspects of repairs, electrical, drive train, suspension, engine, heating, hydraulic to equipment; Troubleshoot and diagnose drivability problems and repair on equipment.

Operate a variety of diagnostic tools and electrical, air and hand tools; Welding and fabricate as needed; Perform body work on equipment; Maintain records, work orders, purchase requests, quotes, timesheets, daily and monthly reports. Attend safety meetings and training sessions as required; Travel to and work within the North Slope Borough villages; May be required to work non-traditional work schedule to include evenings, holidays and weekends; May be subject to 24 hours on-call status; Consistently build knowledge and expertise about current job; Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of NSB Fire Department policies and procedures, firefighting and emergency services techniques and procedures, and related safety and legal issues.

Skill in effectively diagnosing and troubleshooting maintenance and repairs on Fire Department vehicles and equipment. Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required High school graduate or G.E.D/or, a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience. Ability to obtain certification as State of Alaska Firefighter I and Emergency Trauma Technician within two years of appointment

Valid Alaska Drivers License that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria. Ability to obtain site specific Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) training in accordance with 40 C.F.R 265.16 within the probationary period. Ability to obtain Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) current certification within the probationary period

Ability to obtain Small Quantity Handler training in accordance with 40 C.F.R. 273.16 within the probationary period. Ability to obtain site specific Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) training in accordance with 40 C.F.R

112.7 (f)(1)(2) and (3) within probationary period. Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements. Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures

May be exposed to infectious diseases, hazardous materials, dangerous machinery and potential physical harm when responding to fire and rescue emergencies. Special Equipment and Tools Utilized. Emergency response vehicles, specialized fire department and personal protective equipment, rescue equipment and emergency medical tools and gear; also specialized repair tools and equipment.
