JOB SUMMARY The Web Accessibility Specialist ensures that all digital content and Electronic and Information Resources (EIR) are fully accessible to every user, including individuals with disabilities. This role is responsible for evaluating and testing websites, mobile applications, and software interfaces to verify compliance with established accessibility standards and legal requirements.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assess and test digital products for accessibility compliance, including websites, mobile apps, and software interfaces.
  • Ensure compatibility with assistive technologies such as screen readers, magnifiers, and voice-navigation tools.
  • Verify proper labeling and structure of interactive elements, forms, and navigation components.
  • Review images, multimedia, and other visual content to confirm the presence of accurate and meaningful alternative text.
  • Apply and enforce accessibility standards including WCAG 2.1 or higher, Section 508, and relevant state regulations such as Texas Administrative Code Chapters 206 and 213.
  • Provide recommendations and guidance to teams to remediate accessibility issues and improve overall user experience.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required
  • Education
    Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field such as Information Technology, Education, Disability Studies, Communications, or Media Design.
  • Experience
    2 years of experience in an educational setting, including:
    Designing digital assets (educational or otherwise).
    Understanding accommodations and accessibility principles.
    Experience implementing accommodations and following accessibility guidelines
    Foundational understanding of WCAG 2.1+ and Section 508.
    Familiarity with or a strong willingness to learn about HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript.
    Familiarity with or a strong willingness to learn about assistive technologies and accessibility testing tools
    Proven ability and enthusiasm to learn quickly in a dynamic environment.
    An equivalent combination of education and/or directly related experience may be substituted in lieu of the stated requirements.
  • Licenses and Certifications
    Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competence (CPACC) within 1-1/2 Yrs or
    Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS) within 1-1/2 Yrs
JOB DUTIES
  • Maintains an inventory of digital assets, including multimedia, for the assigned unit or division. Track Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs), compliance status, and provide updates on remediation timelines. Conducts accessibility reviews and evaluations of digital content, software, web platforms, multimedia, and applications using a combination of automated and manual testing tools (e.g., Axe, WAVE, Siteimprove).
  • Provides guidance and support to technical teams and content creators on integrating accessibility best practices into their work.
  • Assists in reviewing vendor accessibility documentation (VPATs, ACRs) to support the procurement of accessible digital products and services.
  • Provides recommendations for improving the accessibility of products and services.
  • Documents accessibility findings, help track remediation progress, and contribute to reports detailing compliance status.
  • Actively learns and applies the latest accessibility laws, standards, and technical best practices.
  • Ensures that all products and services are compliant with accessibility standards and regulations.
  • Become familiar with various assistive technologies (e.g., JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver) and accessibility testing tools to understand user experiences and identify barriers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
