TITLE: Boiler Technician  (Steam and Hot Water Systems Technician)

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Performs advanced and specialized skilled work in the inspection, maintenance, repair, installation, and troubleshooting of hot water and steam boiler systems across district facilities. The Boiler Technician  serves as the district's technical specialist for boiler operations, combustion systems, hydronic heating equipment, and associated controls. This position must meet all qualifications of the HVAC Technician position while focusing primarily on maintaining safe, reliable, and energy-efficient boiler systems in all schools.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Licensing/Certification:
Valid North Carolina Driver's License
EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification preferred
State-required Heating and/or Air Conditioning License preferred
Boiler operator certification or equivalent training preferred
Lockout/Tagout safety training required

EDUCATION:
High School Diploma required
Technical or trade school training in HVAC, boiler operation, or mechanical systems required
"North Carolina State H-1 License for Hot Water/ Steam Pressure Vessels preferred but not required"

EXPERIENCE:
Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible HVAC and boiler maintenance experience required
Minimum five (5) years of repair, installation, and maintenance experience with hot water and steam boilers, burners, pumps, and hydronic systems required
Experience with combustion controls, boiler safety devices, and associated control systems preferred
Experience performing seasonal boiler start-up, shutdown, and operational testing required
Experience with performing seasonal combustion analysis on boilers required

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:.
Performs maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of steam and hot water boiler systems.
Troubleshoot HVAC equipment as required.
Conducts seasonal boiler startup, shutdown, and safety inspections.
Maintains combustion systems, burners, and associated fuel supply components.
Inspects safety devices including relief valves, low water cutoffs, flame safeguards, and pressure controls.
Maintains hydronic heating systems including pumps, expansion tanks, and piping components.
Troubleshoots boiler control systems and electrical components.
Monitors system pressures, temperatures, and operating parameters to ensure safe operation.
Assists in developing boiler preventive maintenance schedules district-wide.
Maintains documentation of inspections, repairs, and operational testing.
Coordinates with HVAC staff regarding heating system performance and repairs.
Ensures compliance with safety codes, state boiler regulations, and OSHA standards.
Responds to emergency boiler failures and heating system outages.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Utilities Management or HVAC Foreman.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of steam and hot water boiler systems.
Considerable knowledge of combustion systems and burner operation.
Working knowledge of hydronic heating systems and piping distribution.
Working knowledge of electricity and boiler control systems.
Ability to diagnose complex mechanical and electrical malfunctions.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, piping diagrams, and technical manuals.
Ability to maintain safe boiler operating conditions and perform inspections.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in deadline-driven maintenance environments.

REPORTS TO:
Director of Utilities Management

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 100 pounds, carry up to 70 pounds, and push up to 100 pounds. Requires strength and dexterity to perform advanced mechanical tasks safely in mechanical rooms and equipment areas.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Works indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, and humidity. Exposure to boiler rooms, mechanical equipment, high-temperature surfaces, electrical systems, and moderate to high noise environments.

Salary Grade: NC-09

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

Employee may be exposed to electrical hazards, high-temperature equipment, steam systems, mechanical equipment, and varying environmental conditions. Must comply with OSHA safety regulations and district safety protocols.
