What is a search manager?

Search Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and optimizing a company's search engine marketing (SEM) and sometimes search engine optimization (SEO) strategies. They manage campaigns on platforms like Google Ads and Bing Ads, analyze performance data, and adjust tactics to improve visibility, traffic, and conversions. Their role often involves keyword research, budget management, ad copywriting, and collaborating with marketing teams to achieve business goals.

How does a search manager typically collaborate with other departments to optimize campaign performance?

Search Managers frequently work cross-functionally, partnering with content, analytics, and creative teams to ensure campaigns are aligned with overall marketing goals. They often collaborate with data analysts to review performance metrics and identify optimization opportunities, as well as with designers to refine ad creatives. Regular communication with account managers and clients is also common to share insights and adjust strategies based on evolving business objectives. This collaborative approach helps ensure that search campaigns are both effective and integrated with broader digital marketing efforts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a search manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Search Manager, you need expertise in search engine marketing (SEM), pay-per-click (PPC) campaign management, data analysis, and a relevant degree in marketing or business. Familiarity with tools such as Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising, Google Analytics, and SEMrush, along with certifications like Google Ads Certification, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and project management skills help drive effective campaigns and foster collaboration across teams. These skills are crucial for optimizing search performance, maximizing ROI, and staying competitive in the rapidly evolving digital marketing landscape.

SEO & AI Search Strategist

Location: Remote (US Based Only) | Full-Time

About the Opportunity

emagineHealth is seeking an experienced, client-facing SEO & AI Search Strategist to join our growing Digital Marketing team. This role is at the intersection of traditional SEO and the rapidly evolving world of AI-driven search, including generative engine optimization (GEO) and visibility in platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.

emagineHealth is the Digital-First agency for Healthcare and Life Sciences. With 26+ years in business and unmatched digital experience in the health sectors, you will be joining a team of elite digital marketers whose work has a real impact on patients, clinicians, and the life sciences industry at large.

Our clients operate in B2B life sciences, biotechnology, medical device, pharmaceutical, healthcare technology, and related sectors. We help connect them with the right audiences: clinicians, researchers, payers, and industry buyers. Your work will help ensure our clients are found not just in Google, but in the AI-generated answers that are redefining how information is discovered.

As a full-service agency, our SEO team has access to in-house brand strategists, designers, web developers, copywriters, and technical support staff.

The right candidate brings deep SEO expertise and a genuine curiosity about how AI is transforming search behavior and content discovery.

Responsibilities

AI Search & Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

  • Monitor and optimize client visibility in AI-generated answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and other generative platforms
  • Research how target audiences use AI tools to find information, and translate those insights into content and structure recommendations
  • Implement and validate structured data and schema markup to improve AI readability and citation potential
  • Guide AI content strategy, overseeing how AI-assisted content is created, edited, and published in alignment with brand and compliance standards
  • Stay current on GEO best practices, algorithm shifts in AI search, and emerging platforms

Reporting & Analytics

  • Deliver performance reports for clients across both traditional and AI search channels
  • Conduct data deep-dives using in-house, third-party SEO and analytics tools
  • Track KPIs, surface trends, and make data-backed recommendations
Requirements
  • Experience: 3–5+ years of dedicated experience in SEO, digital content strategy, or web optimization, with a proven track record of adapting to generative search features.
  • AI & LLM Literacy: Deep understanding of how conversational AI tools retrieve and prioritize web content (Retrieval-Augmented Generation / RAG), and familiarity with prompt engineering concepts.
  • Semantic SEO Mastery: Expert knowledge of entity-based search tactics, semantic NLP (Natural Language Processing) optimization, and structured data implementation.
  • Analytical Rigor: Proficiency with GA4, Search Console, and enterprise SEO suites. Ability to build clean experiments, instrument data tracking, and let data drive strategy.
  • Technical Basics: Solid understanding of HTML/CSS, JavaScript SEO bottlenecks, and content management systems (CMS) to seamlessly brief web development teams.
  • Enterprise B2B Clients: Proven ability to manage multiple enterprise B2B client accounts simultaneously
  • Experience with Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, and Google Tag Manager
  • Active Google Analytics certification
  • Experience monitoring and reporting on AI search engine visibility (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity)
  • Hands-on experience with prompt/query research for AI search behavior
  • Strong knowledge of Google best practices, Core Web Vitals, E-E-A-T, and evolving quality guidelines
  • Self-motivated, curious, and committed to continuous self-directed learning in a fast-moving discipline
