The Scientific Project Coordinator primarily manages research projects, coordinating activities and timelines, often requiring project management skills. The Research Associate focuses on conducting experiments, data collection, and scientific analysis. While both roles work within research environments and may share some educational backgrounds, the Coordinator emphasizes project oversight, whereas the Associate emphasizes hands-on research tasks.

Can I make 100k as a project manager?

Scientific project coordinators typically earn lower salaries than project managers, with the latter often reaching or exceeding $100,000 annually depending on industry, experience, and location. Project managers with certifications like PMP and strong leadership skills are more likely to achieve higher salaries, especially in large organizations or specialized fields.

How does a Scientific Project Coordinator typically collaborate with research teams and stakeholders throughout a project?

Scientific Project Coordinators play a central role in facilitating communication and collaboration among multidisciplinary research teams, principal investigators, and external stakeholders. They are responsible for organizing meetings, tracking project milestones, and ensuring that all parties are aligned on objectives and timelines. Coordinators often bridge the gap between scientific staff and administrative units, helping to resolve issues quickly and adapt project plans as needed. This collaborative approach helps maintain project momentum and ensures that deliverables meet both scientific and regulatory standards.

How much is the salary of a project coordinator?

The salary of a scientific project coordinator typically ranges from $50,000 to $80,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced coordinators with specialized skills can earn higher salaries, often supplemented with benefits and opportunities for professional development.

Is a project coordinator an entry level position?

A Scientific Project Coordinator is often an entry-level to mid-level role that involves organizing and managing research projects, requiring skills in communication, organization, and familiarity with scientific methods. While some positions may require prior experience or a relevant degree, many entry-level coordinators can qualify with strong organizational skills and basic knowledge of research processes.

What does a scientific project coordinator do?

A scientific project coordinator manages and oversees research projects, ensuring they stay on schedule, within budget, and meet scientific objectives. They coordinate between researchers, handle logistics, monitor progress, and often use project management tools to facilitate communication and documentation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Scientific Project Coordinator, and why are they important?

A Scientific Project Coordinator typically requires a background in science or research, strong organizational skills, and experience in project management, often with a relevant degree or certification such as PMP. Familiarity with project management software (e.g., MS Project, Asana), data analysis tools, and compliance systems is common in this role. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership abilities help coordinate teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills are vital for ensuring scientific projects are completed on time, within scope, and to high-quality standards.

This role plays a critical part in maintaining project organization, supporting the Stage-Gate delivery model, and ensuring project documentation, reporting, and communication remain accurate and on track.

The Project Coordinator acts as a central point of coordination across Engineering, Procurement, Field/Operations, and customers to support day-to-day execution and follow-through.

What Youโ€™ll Do

Core Responsibilities:

  • Maintain stakeholder lists and support project communication plans.
  • Serve as a coordination point across Engineering, Procurement, Field/Operations, subcontractors, and customers.
  • Ensure timely follow-through on project updates, deliverables, and communications

Stage-Gate & Documentation Management

  • Support Project Managers in executing Thermo Systemsโ€™ Stage-Gate model.
  • Maintain and organize project documentation, Gate artifacts, and approval records.
  • Ensure proper version control, configuration management, and audit readiness.
  • Track Gate readiness and escalate risks to schedule adherence.

Project Controls & Reporting

  • Maintain project schedules, milestone trackers, and look-ahead plans.
  • Track action items, deliverables, and dependencies with clear ownership and deadlines.
  • Prepare recurring status updates, dashboards, and PMO reporting.
  • Support cost tracking, PO logs, invoice routing, and basic budget visibility as directed.

Change Control & Risk Support

  • Track and manage change requests, including documentation and approval workflows.
  • Maintain risk registers and support mitigation tracking.
  • Track project issues, decisions, and lessons learned

Procurement & Vendor Coordination

  • Support procurement activities including RFQs, quote tracking, and submittal logs.
  • Assist with vendor and subcontractor coordination, including documentation and onboarding requirements.
  • Track delivery schedules and follow up on vendor commitments

Quality & Closeout Support

  • Assist with QA/QC documentation including inspections, test records, and punch lists.
  • Support project closeout including as-builts, O&M manuals, training records, and final deliverables.
  • Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Provide feedback to PMO on process and template improvements

What Weโ€™re Looking For

Education & Experience:

  • 0โ€“3+ years of experience in project coordination, project administration, or operations support (industrial, construction, or technical environments preferred).
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in business, engineering, construction management, operations, or related field preferred.
  • Equivalent practical experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Familiarity with basic project management concepts (scope, schedule, cost, risk, and change control) is a plus.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Effective communication skills across cross-functional teams and customers
  • Detail-oriented with strong follow-through and accountability
  • Ability to work independently while supporting a team environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience with project tools (MS Project, Smartsheet, SharePoint, Teams, Jira, or similar) is a plus
  • Ability to quickly learn internal systems, tools, and PMO processes

  • 401(k) with company match
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with low-cost options
  • Paid time off and sick leave
  • Tuition reimbursement and professional credential support
