About The Role

Nature Structural & Molecular Biology (NSMB) is looking for an Associate or Senior Editor to join its editorial team. We are looking for a candidate with a PhD and scientific experience of the areas that NSMB publishes in, who has a broad enthusiasm for science, and who enjoys reading papers outside their area of research.

NSMB is a monthly journal focusing on the functional and mechanistic understanding of how molecular components in a biological process work together.Nature Communications is the leading Nature Portfolio fully open Open Access journal publishing high-quality scientific research across natural, clinical, social and applied sciences.

The successful applicant will be placed with theNSMB editorial team, while also working closely with the Molecular Biology & Genetics and the Structural biology teams atNature Communications. Please note that the successful applicant may be assigned to work at different journals within the Nature Portfolio, depending on portfolio needs in the future.

The responsibilities include:

  • Handling original research papers and working closely with the editorial team on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, overseeing peer review and publication.
  • Making well-reasoned editorial decisions on manuscripts, following expert referee advice.
  • Contributing to content and strategy ofNSMB andNature Communications.
  • Commissioning, editing content such as Reviews, and writing editorials.
  • Liaising extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature Portfolio and with experts in the international scientific community.
  • Attending conferences and visiting research institutions.

To be considered for the position, you will have:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in one of the following fields: Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Cell Biology, Computational Biology
  • Additional research experience is valuable but not needed.
  • A thorough understanding of recent trends and developments in the field isessential.
  • A passion for science and a thirst to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your speciality.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including fluent English (written and spoken).
  • The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline.
  • Be eager to travel and meet scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.
  • Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with editorial experience are encouraged to apply, and may be considered for Senior Editor positions.

This role can be located in our Shanghai, Beijing, Milan, or Pune offices based on a hybrid working pattern and on a full-time, permanent basis, and its starting date is envisaged as soon as possible.
