Join our Youth Crew team in the Kitty Anderson Youth Science Center (KAYSC) and engage high school students in science learning through real museum work and empower them to pursue their potential, experienced in the world of science. KAYSC is committed to serving the community, and stay grounded in their awareness of young people's ability to impact our institutions and communities.
Work Environment & Schedule: Will be working primarily in the KAYSC space at the Science Museum of Minnesota with occasional field trips and external meetings. Work schedule involves occasional evenings and weekends. Must be able to transport self in the Twin Cities area with own transportation or via public transit.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
โ€ข Work on a team with other high school students to learn critical thinking and professional skills through team-based projects.
โ€ข Explore topics in social justice, various science content areas and STEM careers.
โ€ข Participate fully in professional development in: critical thinking, team building, science, research, group facilitation/ informal education, community engagement/organizing, evaluation/reflection, documentation.
โ€ข Learn and apply a range of research techniques about various community issues.
โ€ข Participate in planned networking activities with community organizations and individuals.
โ€ข Learn and apply STEM tools, technology, and terminology in group projects.
โ€ข Communicate effectively with managers and co-workers.
โ€ข Apply critical thinking skills to navigate personal and professional situations.
โ€ข Work in a group to create and deliver science and social justice workshops in the community.
โ€ข Display professionalism during community events and while co-teaching workshops.
โ€ข Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
โ€ข Must be currently be enrolled as a high school student.
โ€ข Willingness to work on a team and meet attendance requirements.
โ€ข Must have a positive attitude, be reliable and self-motivated.
Preferred Qualifications:
โ€ข At least 10 hours of volunteer work is preferred.
โ€ข Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
โ€ข Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
โ€ข Bilingual a plus (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).
