School Guidance Counselor
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the school principal, the guidance counselor supports the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students. This role provides students, parents, and staff with information on educational and career opportunities; administers and interprets assessment tools; and assists students in developing and achieving academic and occupational goals. Additionally, the guidance counselor serves as the school test coordinator, overseeing all aspects of state-mandated testing, including planning, scheduling, training, security, and compliance. The counselor also manages and ensures the accuracy of student academic records, including grade calculations, transcripts, and report cards.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Assists students in making course and subject selections, as well as with evaluating career interests and choices.
  • Assists in the scheduling of classes.
  • Obtains and disseminates information regarding occupational opportunities to students and to classes studying occupations.
  • Assists students with college admissions, scholarships, and identifying employment opportunities.
  • Coordinates with administrators and other teaching staff members to ascertain individual student abilities and needs, including students with special needs, and to familiarize stakeholders with available guidance services.
  • Researches educational and career opportunities, and coordinates with teachers, college and university personnel, resource specialists, and business and community organizations to provide information and make recommendations.
  • Assists with the registration and orientation of students who are new to the school regarding procedures and educational opportunities.
  • Assists with the school district's dropout prevention efforts.
  • Serves as a ready resource to students, providing counseling that promotes personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, including grades, transcripts, and the provision of student information to colleges, employers, and others in accordance with district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Oversees the preparation and distribution of report cards and ensures the accuracy of grade calculations and academic records.
  • Serves as the school test coordinator, overseeing all aspects of state and district-mandated testing, including test security, training, scheduling, administration, and compliance with state guidelines.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
