What is a contracted tutor?

Contracted Tutors are educators who are hired on a temporary or part-time basis, usually through a contract, to provide academic instruction or support to students. They may work independently, through tutoring agencies, or directly with schools or organizations. Their responsibilities often include helping students understand course material, preparing for exams, and improving study skills. Contracted Tutors typically have expertise in specific subjects and adapt their teaching methods to meet the needs of individual learners.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contracted tutor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contracted Tutor, you generally need subject matter expertise, teaching qualifications or certifications, and experience in lesson planning and assessment. Familiarity with virtual learning platforms, collaboration tools, and online grading systems is often required. Strong communication, adaptability, and motivational skills help tutors connect with diverse learners and address individual needs. These skills and qualifications enable effective instruction, foster student engagement, and support successful learning outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by contracted tutors, and how can they be addressed?

Contracted tutors often encounter challenges such as managing varying student learning styles, balancing multiple clients, and adapting to different curricula or institutional expectations. Establishing clear communication with clients and setting transparent expectations at the outset can help mitigate misunderstandings. Additionally, staying organized with scheduling tools and continuously updating teaching methods through professional development can enhance effectiveness and job satisfaction.

Job description

Job Summary - Contracted Tutor

Shiery’s Tutoring is seeking a highly-qualified teacher with previous teaching and/or tutoring experience to add to our growing team. Tutors will work with one student (or two students working on the same material) at a time to support students' academic needs and goals.

We are looking for tutors to work with students one-on-one, or in small groups, in any or all of the following subject areas:

  • Elementary Literacy (specifically reading & writing)
  • Elementary Math
  • Middle School Math
  • Middle School English
  • Geometry, Algebra, & Algebra II
  • Trigonometry & Pre-calculus
  • Calculus and/or AP Calculus
  • Biology, Physics, and/or Chemistry
  • High School English & Writing, AP Language Arts and/or AP Literacy and Composition
  • High School History and/or AP History Classes
  • SAT and ACT Test Prep

Contractors may set their own hours. More offered availability, in addition to skills in multiple subject areas (especially the bolded ones, those are the most requested currently) generally leads to gaining clientele more quickly. We advertise tutors and match them up with students, rather than just matching a student to a tutor's schedule, helping to build a long term partnership.

Mission Statement

Shiery’s Tutoring is a teacher created and led learning center devoted to cultivating students' potential and success. Our slogan is Your Local Educational Partner, which shows our goal to come alongside families in our community and work with them to meet their student's educational needs.

Qualification and Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in teaching or related field or extensive experience in related field
  • Teaching certification preferred (can be in progress)
  • At least 3 years prior teaching/tutoring experience preferred
  • Strong content knowledge and awareness of curriculum
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to use technology and software (Zoom, Google Docs)

Location

All tutoring and classes will be in-person at our center. We do have the ability to offer online tutoring, but we are specifically looking for an in-person, local teacher as the request for online sessions is rare. Our center is located in Bellevue at 14715 NE Bel-Red Rd, Suite 103.

Rates

$30 to $50 per hour

The hours for this contracted position will vary based on your availability, subjects qualified to teach, and student availability. Our current pay for a 1:1 in-person tutoring session is $40/hour.

Apply

Interested candidates are encouraged to visit our website at www.shierystutoring.com to learn more about our center and our philosophy. Please send your resume, a list of the subjects you qualified and ready to tutor, along with a short paragraph about why you would be a good fit to nfukuhara at shierystutoring dot com. Feel free to include what education means to you and why you work in this particular field.

Company Description
