What is a school social worker?

School social workers are licensed professionals who support students' emotional, social, and academic well-being within educational settings. They work with students, families, and school staff to address issues such as behavioral challenges, mental health concerns, truancy, and family crises. School social workers also connect families to community resources and help create a safe, supportive learning environment. Their goal is to remove barriers to learning and promote student success.

What does a school social worker do?

As a school social worker, your responsibilities and duties include providing services to students, as well as educators, administrators, and students’ families to help students succeed in school, in spite of difficult situations. You may provide counsel and education to students regarding stress management, difficult domestic situations, attendance issues, substance abuse, and teen pregnancy. You may also help teachers understand how best to cope with behavior problems in the classroom. Your job is to work with everyone involved in the student's life to develop plans and strategies that can positively impact the student’s education.

How does a school social worker typically collaborate with teachers and parents to support students?

School Social Workers frequently work alongside teachers and parents to identify and address barriers that may impact a student's academic and social success. They participate in meetings, such as Individualized Education Program (IEP) sessions, and provide strategies for classroom management, behavioral interventions, or mental health support.
