Job description

AVID TUTOR SUBSTITUTE
(must be current college student)
ASSIGNMENT: Various middle schools-hours vary during school day
On call-at will, not to exceed 180 days
PROCEDURE FOR Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications to be considered for the position.
SELECTION: Applications will be screened and the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process. Only applicants selected for final interview will be notified. Verification of High School Diploma, its equivalent or higher and current college transcripts must be submitted with application.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under direct supervision of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) coordinator/teacher, the AVID Tutor Substitutes will facilitate student access to rigorous curriculum in small groups according to the AVID tuturial model (2 to 3 days per week) throughout the academic year. Students will be assigned to the tutor by the site principal, site AVID Coordinator or AVID teacher.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
AVID Tutor Substitutes will be trained to tutor small groups of middle school students under the supervision of a teacher in an AVID classroom during the school day. Tutor Substitutes serve as guides and facilitators of students' learning through questioning, writing and thinking and discussion. Individuals in these substitute, part-time positions work with middle school students and serve as excellent age-appropriate role models of motivated, organized, successful college students who believe that AVID students can and will succeed. AVID tutor substitutes work in a supportive manner with middle school students, are advocates of students, and are responsible to the AVID teacher. AVID tutor substitutes must be willing to meet regularly to discuss student progress and to confer with the teacher about future plans. Hours vary between 7:00am and 3:00pm.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of the AVID coordinator/teacher, tutors perform the following types of tasks. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this position.
• Tutor students in small study groups, assisting them in all subject areas based on the class and text notes they have collected in their AVID binders; Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and text notes, book notes, etc.; Determine from student notes and discussion the concepts that need to be taught or re-taught.
• Become familiar with the materials in the AVID Libraries.
• Conduct mini-lessons in the process of writing in all subject areas, study skills, and other aspects of college preparation.
• Conduct brainstorming and clustering sessions.
• Lead peer critique groups in the Writing Conference.
• Contact teachers regarding course outlines and assignments schedules as directed by the AVID coordinator/teacher.
• Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
• Attend all required tutoring training sessions.
• Determines from teacher directions and evaluation of student work, the concepts that need to be the focus of tutorial
• Tutors students in the skills that will allow them to read and understand a variety of materials; Conducts tutorial sessions; Supports students in all stages of the learning process.
• Utilization of Socratic questioning and writing techniques.
• Assists teacher in maintaining discipline and encouraging acceptable behavior; establish and maintain control in the classroom.
• Exhibit a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school district.
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Establish and maintain a cooperative, professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
• Must be flexible to meet the needs of the school.
• Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
• Keep informed of and comply with district and school regulations and policies.
• Maintain prompt and regular attendance for each assignment.
QUALIFICATIONS
-Successful college students; strong math and English background, evidenced by college transcript; High School Diploma or GED. Must have own transportation; Mandatory paid tutor training sessions.
