Job description

Saint Thomas Episcopal School is currently seeking bus drivers to transport students to academic, sporting, and special events throughout the school year. The hourly pay ranges from $18.00 to $25.00.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Bus Driver is responsible for safely driving students to and from school on a schedule assigned by the Director of Transportation. At Saint Thomas Episcopal, all employees are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate clearly and respectfully, champion the needs of our students, and drive continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

- At least 25 years of age

- Valid Class B Texas commercial driver’s license

- State Bus Driver’s Certification course

- Successful completion of behind-the-wheel training course and discipline management procedures

Preferred:

- High School Diploma or GED from an accredited school

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

- Class A or B commercial driver’s license with (P) Passenger and (S) School Bus endorsements, plus two years of experience driving an automobile

- Acceptable motor vehicle record and criminal history

- Must pass an annual physical examination by a designated health professional, paid for by Saint Thomas Episcopal

- Must have an interest in and liking for children and young adults

- Possess mental maturity and emotional stability to operate a school bus safely despite distractions from sometimes loud and boisterous students

- Must have the ability to understand verbal and written instructions in English

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

- Drive students to and from school safely

- Abide by the time schedule of the assigned route(s)

- Obey all traffic laws and department policies

- Maintain student discipline on the bus in a positive and caring manner. Work with school administrators to resolve cases of misbehavior

- Load and unload students as required to maintain a daily schedule using a hand-operated door mechanism

- Be able to perform emergency bus evacuation of students on the bus. Walk to the rear of the bus, exit the rear door, and/or lift students in emergencies

- Maintain current route maps and folders. It is the driver’s responsibility to maintain the current folder scheduled time and have all changes approved by the supervisor

- Maintain seating charts for elementary and middle school students

- Maintain a clean bus interior

- Maintain an appropriate level of fuel

- Administer basic first aid as training when necessary

- Be responsible for being at work on time every day

- Communicate clearly

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, prolonged sitting, repetitive hand and arm motions, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. This position will also require traveling within the Houston Metropolitan area. Mental demands: Maintain emotional control, ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written in English for safety reasons. Environmental Conditions: Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot and cold) and vehicle fumes.
