What is sales business development?

Sales business development refers to the strategies and processes used to identify, attract, and secure new business opportunities for an organization. Professionals in this role focus on building relationships with potential clients, exploring new markets, and driving revenue growth. They often work closely with marketing, product, and sales teams to create and implement plans that expand the company's customer base. The main goal is to generate leads, nurture prospects, and ultimately convert them into loyal customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales business development professional?

To thrive in Sales Business Development, you need strong skills in lead generation, relationship building, negotiation, and a solid understanding of the industry, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software like Salesforce, sales analytics tools, and pipeline management systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, resilience, and strategic thinking are valuable soft skills that help professionals stand out. These competencies are critical for driving revenue growth, expanding market presence, and building long-term client relationships.

What are some common challenges faced by sales business development professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Sales Business Development professionals often encounter challenges such as breaking into new markets, building trust with potential clients, and managing long sales cycles. To address these, it's important to conduct thorough market research, leverage existing networks for warm introductions, and maintain consistent follow-up with prospects. Collaboration with marketing and product teams can also help tailor offerings to client needs and streamline the sales process. Staying adaptable and proactive in learning about industry trends can further support success in this role.

Job description

A growing Canadian healthcare organization specializing in the distribution of medical equipment, supplies, and related products is expanding its sales team. The organization works with healthcare providers, hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, EMS organizations, government institutions, and other professional customers across Canada. With an established customer base and continued growth ahead, the company is investing in a dedicated outbound business development function to proactively identify new customers and create additional revenue opportunities.

We are seeking a Business Development Representative to join the sales team and play a key role in developing new business across Canada. This is a phone-first, outbound B2B sales position designed for someone who enjoys prospecting, starting conversations, and creating opportunities from the ground up.

Your focus will be finding the right organizations, reaching the right people, understanding their needs, qualifying the opportunity, and booking productive meetings for the Account Management team. You will spend the majority of your time proactively reaching new prospects rather than managing an existing book of business.

This is not a customer service role. We are looking for a true hunter who is comfortable picking up the phone, working through rejection, asking good questions, and consistently creating new conversations.

Previous B2B sales, business development, inside sales, or appointment-setting experience is an asset, but character and mentality are critical to this position. The right person is competitive, persistent, confident, curious, coachable, and motivated by measurable results. Someone with a strong sales background and a genuine hunter mentality would be ideal, but we are also open to a high-potential individual who has the right personality and drive to develop into a strong salesperson.

The position is currently fully in-office. The organization intends to create greater flexibility over time, but that structure is not yet in place.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct high-volume outbound calls to healthcare organizations and businesses throughout Canada.
  • Identify target accounts, decision-makers, procurement professionals, and other key contacts.
  • Initiate conversations and effectively communicate the organization's value proposition.
  • Ask strong discovery questions to understand customer needs, purchasing activity, and potential opportunities.
  • Qualify prospects based on need, fit, potential, and timing.
  • Book qualified meetings and appointments for Account Managers.
  • Maintain accurate prospect information, activity, notes, and follow-ups within Odoo CRM.
  • Work closely with Account Managers to ensure qualified opportunities are properly handed off and followed through.
What We're Looking For

The most important quality we're looking for is a hunter's mentality.

You should genuinely enjoy the process of going after new business. You won't be discouraged by unanswered calls, gatekeepers, objections, or rejection. Instead, you'll see them as part of the process and continue looking for the next opportunity.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Fluent in English and French, both written and verbal.
  • Confident and comfortable speaking with prospects over the phone.
  • Comfortable with cold calling and high-volume outbound activity.
  • Persistent and resilient when faced with rejection.
  • Competitive and motivated by achieving measurable goals.
  • Naturally curious and capable of asking strong discovery questions.
  • Comfortable communicating with executives, purchasing managers, procurement professionals, and other decision-makers.
  • Organized and disciplined when managing CRM activity and follow-up.
  • Coachable and willing to continuously improve their sales approach.
  • Self-motivated and capable of maintaining consistent activity without constant supervision.
  • Professional, energetic, and confident when representing the organization.
Experience

Previous experience in B2B sales, business development, inside sales, outbound sales, lead generation, appointment setting, healthcare sales, medical supplies, wholesale, or distribution is an asset.

However, years of experience will not be the deciding factor. We are much more interested in finding someone with the personality and work ethic to succeed in an outbound environment. A candidate who is hungry, competitive, persistent, and naturally good on the phone can be highly successful in this position even without an extensive sales background.

The ideal hire will bring a combination of sales ability, character, discipline, and genuine hunger to win new business.

How Success Will Be Measured

This position has a straightforward sales funnel:

Calls Conversations Decision Makers Qualified Opportunities Appointments New Business

Success will be measured not simply by how many calls you make, but by your ability to consistently turn activity into meaningful conversations, qualified opportunities, and appointments for the Account Management team.

Compensation & Growth Opportunity
  • Competitive base salary + performance-based bonus/commission.
  • The anticipated base salary is approximately $60,000$65,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Compensation is open for the right candidate. We are willing to have a conversation around salary expectations and pay what is necessary to attract the right person for the role.
  • Additional performance-based earning potential tied to results.
  • Opportunity to grow into a larger sales position as the organization expands.
  • Direct exposure to sales leadership.
  • Opportunity to help build and shape a new outbound business development engine.
  • Career growth based on performance, results, and demonstrated ability.
Why Join?

This is an opportunity to join a growing Canadian healthcare organization at an exciting point in its sales development. Rather than simply stepping into an established territory and maintaining existing accounts, you will have the opportunity to help build the company's outbound business development function from the ground up.

You'll work directly with sales leadership, have meaningful responsibility for generating new business, and have the opportunity to grow alongside the organization.

If you're competitive, persistent, confident on the phone, and genuinely enjoy the challenge of opening doors and creating opportunities where none previously existed, this is an opportunity to build a long-term career in B2B sales.
