Department
Environmental Health and Safety
Responsibilities
  • Evaluates Principal Investigator Proposal applications for the use of radioactive materials and subsequent: laboratory setup, on-site inspection and surveillance during use, and post use closeout surveillance of FSU laboratories and satellite facilities. Inspects analytical, medical, and veterinary x-ray machines and linear accelerator facilities for compliance with regulatory requirements. Responsible for complete knowledge of Federal and State regulations which relate to radiation safety in a university environment. Serves as the Radiation Safety Officer during their absence.
  • Determines the exposure potential for radiation workers and implements appropriate control measures, including special decontamination projects, to keep personnel exposures as low as reasonably achievable. Oversee the radioactive waste program including collection, storage, and disposal. Arranges for the transportation and disposal of long-lived radioactive waste. Ensures compliance with all regulations and ordinances.
  • Prepares training curriculum for and helps teach the Radiation Safety Course. Also provides on-the-job training to laboratory users and new employees in areas that include biological effects of radiation, instrumentation, dosimetry, physics, licensing and regulatory requirements, general laboratory safety, and applied health physics. Manages radioactive material inventories for the Principal Investigators by examining records of purchase, use and disposal; maintains their technical accuracy and timeliness in accordance with license conditions and regulatory requirements. Assists the non-ionizing radiation safety program, serving as the Assistant University Laser Safety Officer, and addressing magnetic field, electromagnetic field, radio frequency, microwave and other non-ionizing safety concerns.
  • Performs periodic radiation detection instrument calibration, making adjustments and repairs when necessary. Performs inventory and leak testing of radioactive sealed sources in accordance with license conditions and all applicable regulations. Performs specialized computer related tasks, such as adaptation of computer programs for databases of radioactive material inventories, dose records and automated reporting. Performs environmental monitoring by sample collection and analysis and performs member-of-the-public dose assessments.
  • Remains constantly vigilant to changes or advances that may have an impact on EH&S related programs through proactive methods such as audits, research, interactions with colleagues at related institutions and by attending professional courses or society meetings. Immediately report any findings that may affect University programs to supervisors and assist in determining and implementing necessary policy changes to ensure best practices are realized.
  • Performs special projects as needed, such as researching approaches to improve radiation detection, reducing dose to personnel, minimizing environmental releases, minimizing waste disposal costs, decommissioning inactive facilities and equipment, and revising departmental policies and procedures in response to regulatory and technological changes.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree and five years of experience in physics, medical physics, other physical science, engineering, or applied mathematics or a post high school education or equivalent and related combination of education and same experience equal to nine years. Must meet requirements for Radiation Safety Officer under F.A.C. 64E-5.648 at time of hire.
  • A valid State of Florida or Georgia Driver's License or ability to obtain upon hire.
