What does a Robotics Engineer do?

A Robotics Engineer designs, builds, and tests robots and robotic systems that are able to perform tasks typically done by humans. They work on integrating hardware and software to create machines that can automate processes in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. Their responsibilities often include researching new technologies, programming robotic systems, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with other engineers. Robotics Engineers play a key role in advancing automation and improving efficiency and safety in various sectors.

What Does a Robotics Engineer Do?

A robotics engineer designs and often builds robots from their plans and ensures the correct processes are in place for the robot to run properly. They work with their clients to determine costs and design specifications, then they design software systems to control robotic systems; build, configure, and test robots; and automate processes to increase production and precision. Once the robotic system is in place, the robotics engineer helps troubleshoot any problems the clients have with the system.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science, typically backed by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or C++, CAD software, and robotics platforms such as ROS (Robot Operating System) is essential. Problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for designing, building, and refining innovative robotic systems that meet complex technical and user requirements.

What types of projects do Robotics Engineers typically collaborate on with cross-functional teams?

Robotics Engineers often work closely with professionals from software development, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering to design, build, and test robotic systems. Projects can range from automating manufacturing processes to developing autonomous vehicles or medical robots. Collaboration is essential, as engineers must integrate hardware and software components while ensuring systems meet safety and performance standards. Effective communication and teamwork are key to successfully bringing innovative robotics solutions from concept to reality.

What is the difference between Robotics Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectRobotics EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or related field; certifications in robotics or automationBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license optional
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and programming robotic systems in labs or manufacturing settingsDesigning and analyzing mechanical systems in various industries, including manufacturing, automotive, aerospace
Industry UsageRobotics companies, automation firms, manufacturingManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, product design

Robotics Engineers focus on designing and developing robotic systems, combining knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, working on mechanical systems across multiple industries. While both roles require engineering degrees, Robotics Engineers often need specialized skills in programming and automation. The choice depends on your interest in robotics and automation versus general mechanical system design.

Lead Software Engineer - UI Path

JPMorganChase

Wilmington, DE • On-site

Full-time

Posted 20 days ago

Job description

Job Summary:
JPMorgan Chase is a leading financial services firm that provides a broad range of financial products to help customers achieve their financial goals. The Lead Software Engineer - UI Path will be an integral part of the Operations Technology team, responsible for enhancing and delivering technology products, managing automation estates, and ensuring production reliability and compliance.
Responsibilities:
• Own production reliability, performance, and control compliance for a large UiPath automation estate processing high volumes across complex workflows (hybrid Automation Suite on-prem + UiPath Cloud).
• Partner globally with Product, Operations, App teams, Infrastructure, IAM, Security, and Risk to align priorities, manage dependencies, and deliver a reliability/control improvement roadmap.
• Own release management for net-new and live BOT inventory: risk/impact assessment, test evidence, approvals, implementation/rollback plans, and post-change verification.
• Provide engineering oversight of Orchestrator operations (queues, schedules/triggers, robots/machines, assets, package/version governance) across on-prem and cloud.
• Set production engineering standards (logging, exception taxonomy, retry/idempotency, safe restart/resume) and mentor engineers to scale operational excellence.
• Drive major incident management and cross-stack RCA/problem management, reducing repeat failures and improving MTTR for business-critical automations.
• Ensure risk/audit readiness: least privilege, segregation of duties, access reviews, evidence retention, and traceability from change → release → runtime.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts and 5+ years applied experience
• Deep, hands-on experience operating UiPath Orchestrator and supporting large-scale automation estates, including high-volume queue workloads and complex dependency chains.
• Demonstrated engineering leadership running mission-critical production services in a regulated environment, with accountability for uptime, controls, and service outcomes.
• Strong command of incident/problem/change management (incident leadership, RCA discipline, change risk governance, rollback readiness, PIR ownership).
• Ability to influence and execute through global, cross-functional partners (Product, App teams, Infrastructure, IAM, Security, Risk) and manage competing priorities.
• Proven experience in hybrid UiPath environments: UiPath Automation Suite (on-prem) plus UiPath Cloud, with ability to standardize governance across both.
• Track record of delivering audit-ready operations: SoD, least privilege, access governance, evidence retention, and traceability.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience providing executive-level status and risk framing.
• Hands on AI models, with ability to quickly adapt and deliver improvements.
Preferred:
• Experience with secrets management / privileged access patterns and operational controls in banking-grade environments (vault integration, credential rotation, break-glass).
• Demonstrated people leadership (formal or matrix) in production engineering/operations, including mentoring talent and building sustainable operating models.
• UiPath certifications (advanced developer/architect/Orchestrator operations) and/or platform operations credentials relevant to Automation Suite.
• Experience implementing SRE-style practices for RPA/platform services (SLOs/SLIs, error budgets, reliability roadmaps, observability standards).
• Experience driving CI/CD and controlled releases for UiPath packages/libraries across multiple environments.
Company:
