Robotics Simulation information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, computer science, and mathematics, often supported by a relevant degree such as electrical engineering or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools like Gazebo, ROS (Robot Operating System), MATLAB/Simulink, and programming languages such as Python or C++ is essential. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are key soft skills that help in designing and refining complex simulation models. These abilities are crucial for creating accurate simulations that accelerate development, testing, and deployment of robotic systems.

What are some typical challenges faced when working in robotics simulation, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in robotics simulation often encounter challenges such as accurately modeling real-world physics, ensuring simulation fidelity, and integrating with hardware or software systems. Addressing these requires a strong understanding of both robotics and simulation tools, as well as effective collaboration with engineers, software developers, and testers. Staying updated with advancements in simulation platforms and maintaining clear documentation are key strategies to overcome these challenges and ensure the simulations provide meaningful insights for development and testing.

What is robotics simulation?

Robotics simulation is the use of computer software to model and test the behavior of robots in a virtual environment. This allows engineers and researchers to design, program, and optimize robots without needing physical prototypes, saving time and resources. Simulations can replicate real-world conditions, enabling the analysis of robot movement, sensor data, and task performance before implementation. Robotics simulation is commonly used in developing autonomous systems, industrial automation, and research applications.

What is the difference between Robotics Simulation vs Robotics Software Engineer?

Learn how you can start or jumpstart your career with us.

Qnity is seeking a Senior Automated Process Equipment Mechanical Design Engineer for the Kalrez business. The selected candidate will lead design development for automated process equipment for the regional manufacturing sites and collaborate closely with our partner site in China to finalize designs and support fabrication, testing, and deployment. The ideal candidate will have detailed expertise in designing and commissioning automated equipment for discrete processes. In addition, this candidate will have a concentration in 3D modeling, product data management (PDM), and simulation. Design and development needs will range from improvements to existing manufacturing equipment to the development of new, custom-designed equipment. Lean Automation techniques will be utilized to ensure layout optimization is achieved through value stream maps (VSMs) and process simulation. The engineer will be responsible for developing and vetting concepts, proof-of-principle designs, prototypes, and commercial-scale equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop first-of-a-kind custom equipment including conceptualizing new processes and equipment based on business requirement
  • Ability to design components and machines in a modular way that can be utilized in subsequent machines and flexible enough to have the ability to change out components easily.
  • Work with operations, maintenance, safety, and engineering to design improvements to existing equipment
  • Provide expertise in mechanical layout to support projects at the sites.
  • Provide expertise in 3D modeling, product data management (PDM), and simulation.
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders at the site to understand the challenges they face and provide an automated solution. The solution must be engineered in a way that has minimal impact on the area's ability to produce, and is minimally invasive to our external customer change protocol
  • Ability to collaborate with internal and external suppliers to design, fabricate, and qualify equipment.
  • Provides technical expertise to support the following:
    • Business-level and site-level Technology Roadmaps
    • Automation Assessments
    • Capital projects including Statements of Work (SOW), Design Reviews, Construction, Acceptance Tests, Commissioning, and Safety Reviews
    • Site Automation Evaluations/Improvements
  • Ability to collaborate on multiple projects at the same time as a technical expert.
  • Supports the EHS organization to assist with investigations and action items.
  • Collaborate and support of the Qnity S1M machine safety standard. Proactively address machine safety risks by participating in machine risk assessments (MRAs) during design and execution.
  • Develop equipment standards to support the equipment from a leveraged engineering perspective and deploy the technology throughout the organization.
  • Provides technical expertise for Management of Change, including technical reviewer of site MOC processes.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in a discrete manufacturing environment focused on the detailed mechanical design and maintenance of automated equipment preferred.
