Senior Strategy & Risk Consultant

We are looking to hire someone to work in either our Columbus, Ohio or Merrillville, IN office (3 days/week hybrid schedule)

Job Summary

The Strategy and Risk team helps NiSource make decisions under uncertainty. The team leverages its integrated capabilities and expertise to deliver comprehensive analyses and innovative solutions across the enterprise. The Consultant Job Family team member effectively participates on a variety of cross-functional project teams that provide a wide range of internal and external research to NiSource. They will provide dedicated analysis, consultation and collaboration across functions for the development and communication of appropriate strategies, programs and plans necessary to address current and future issues facing our environment across NiSource. They will evaluate, make recommendations and drive to closure specific projects related to regulatory strategy, risk, and insurance. They will maintain an external perspective of industry best practices.

Essential Functions
  • Performs industry, competitor, and customer analyses; monitor and evaluate impact of trends; watch for key opportunities and barriers; gather quantitative and qualitative data
  • Builds models in Excel to analyze data and financial decisions.
  • Leverages enterprise risk reporting information, researching primary and secondary risk impacts. Uses key risk management tools such as risk registers, risk dashboards, tracking metrics, and monitoring mitigation strategy.
  • Identifies and understands issues, problems, and opportunities; compares data from different sources to draw conclusions; uses effective approaches for choosing course of action or developing appropriate solutions; takes action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequences.
  • Assists with the creation and updating materials to be presented to the Risk Management Committee and Strategy Council comprised of the Executive Council and other executive audiences.
  • Compiles, organizes and formats data, including quantitative and qualitative analysis required for internal and external reporting. Researches reporting issues, assists with the adoption of new reporting requirements, and builds business case development and financial models.
  • Lead project tasks under direction of Senior/ Lead Consultants, including tracking resources and deliverables.
  • Thrive in ambiguous environments by demonstrating adaptability, critical thinking, and proactive problem solving to navigate uncertainty and deliver effective outcomes.

  • Includes Strategy and Risk Analyst duties plus:
  • Conducts various analyses for the development of strategy, risk, and insurance programs
  • Creates materials to be presented to the Risk Management Committee and Strategy Council comprised of the Executive Counsel and other executive audiences.
  • Solves problems in the areas of strategy, risk, and insurance by applying econometric, actuarial science, and/or statistical methodologies.
  • Leverages innovative and analytical approaches to make recommendations for risk appetite, risk tolerances, capital allocations and returns on allocated capital.
  • Analyzes and researches financial, market, and regulatory environments through the lens of customers and other stakeholders.
  • Partner with internal and external SMEs to test and refine methodologies for assessing a wide range of risks across the company.
  • Translates technical analyses into communication materials to effectively present to colleagues for peer review and discussions with stakeholders.
  • Develop and deliver high impact Power Point presentations with advanced formatting, visualization, and story telling techniques to effectively communicate complex information to diverse audiences including senior leadership.
  • Design and implement comprehensive strategy methodologies, including scenario planning, strategic frameworks, and roadmaps to drive alignment across cross functional teams and achieve organizational goals.
  • Lead the execution of strategy methodologies by aligning cross functional teams, monitoring progress against roadmaps, and ensuring the integration of strategic initiatives into business plans and long range plans.
  • Demonstrate exceptional time management skills by efficiently prioritizing tasks, meeting tight deadlines, and delivering high quality results in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
Required Qualifications For Position
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Engineering, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience using Excel to analyze data.
  • Experience applying economic, statistic, and econometric concepts/ methods.
  • 4-6 years (Minimum of two (2) years) of relevant experience (e.g., corporate strategy, accounting, financial planning, risk, legal, insurance, etc.).
  • Proven experience in producing accurate and timely work with minimal supervision.
  • Proven experience in identifying and resolving complex problems and manage conflicts.
  • Proven experience in leading and coordinating projects and supervise the work of others.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated planning, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and meet deadlines.
  • Intermediate skillset in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word), experience handling large amounts of data and building financial or other decision support models in Excel and advanced Microsoft Office (Power Point) story telling ability
  • Advanced interpersonal and written communication skills, including ability to represent the company to external stakeholders, as well as provide presentation preparation and leadership to senior executives within the company.
Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position
  • Previous electric or gas utility experience.
  • Experience with a variety of problem solving tools and techniques (e.g. failure mode, stochastic modeling, cause analysis, fault tree, quantitative analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, etc.).
  • Masters in Business Administration
  • Operational Excellence experience
  • Project Management experience
  • Effectively communicate with senior leadership by crafting clear, concise, and impactful messages by providing strategic recommendations to drive informed decision making
