POSITION/ROLE OVERVIEW
The School of Jazz and Contemporary Music at The New School's College of Performing Arts is seeking highly qualified Overhire Ringer/Accompanist, Jazz, Pop, and Improvised Music Ensembles to join its team. Reporting to the Part Time Operations Manager, the Overhire Ringer/Accompanist, Jazz, Pop, and Improvised Music Ensembles is directly responsible for supporting, accompanying, and performing with ensembles and performance based projects throughout the college.
We're looking for professional, experienced, flexible musician(s) to support initiatives within the School of Jazz & Contemporary Music on an as-needed basis. This includes the New School Studio Orchestra, Improvisation Ensembles, Elective Ensembles, and other groups. Alumni of the College of Performing Arts are strongly encouraged to apply.
Formed in 2015, the College of Performing Arts draws together the Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the School of Drama. College of Performing Arts students are actors, musicians, performers, writers, improvisers, creative technologists, entrepreneurs, composers, arts managers, and multidisciplinary artists. Our community collaborates with colleagues across The New School in a wide array of disciplines, from the visual arts and fashion design, to the social sciences, public policy, advocacy, and more.
This is an overhire position without regular or guaranteed weekly hours. Opportunities for work will be scheduled on an as-needed basis by the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. This position may be renewed pending institutional need and availability of funding.
CORE CAPABILITIES, PRIMARY DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Attend all the rehearsals and performances as scheduled with the ensemble
  • Bring one's own instrument(s) and gear as needed
  • Analyze assigned music prior to rehearsal and performances (e.g., correct tempos, challenging transitions, dynamics) to ensure efficient use of rehearsal time
  • Exhibit professionalism in all interactions with students, faculty, staff, and audience members
  • Be prepared to play professionally with one's assigned part
  • Adhere to departmental guidelines regarding reporting hours, payroll deadlines, and other items including attire
  • Advise management when a sub is needed

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Trained musician (genre depends on repertoire for the ensemble)
  • Ability to play all assigned instruments, including auxiliaries
  • Prior large ensemble experience
  • Familiarity with American Vernacular genres
  • Excellent sight reading skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Familiarity with contemporary and non-traditional scores.
  • Alumni of the College of Performing Arts
  • Section leadership experience
  • Professional level improvisation skills (level and genre depends on repertoire)

WORK MODE
This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement.
Up to 15 hours per week, per cycle, variable commitment with no guaranteed hours. Rehearsals are typically on weekday afternoons/evenings between 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM or 4:00pm-10:00pm, depending on the ensemble schedule.
SALARY RANGE
$45.00/hour
